I am asking for the SR5 with both humbuckers active and the eq set to the center detents vs the Bongo with the same setup.

I am trying to avoid a hissy fit ... yuck yuck yuck :p

I haven't played a SR5HH, but the Sterling HH I tried was eerily quiet. I believe they are (or were) the same electronics.

Had an SR5HH...have a Bongo5HH. Neither has any hiss.

OTOH, every amp with a tweeter that I've ever owned has hiss if you don't turn the tweeter down...with or without a bass plugged in.

Neither has hiss or hum.

Boy I'm really confused. I bought my bass used but I don't have reason to believe something is wrong with it. However I definitely hear hiss when using headphones and having the bass going direct into a mixer with no EQ. My Bartolini NTMB equipped bass is dead silent (ok, maybe a teensie amount of hiss). My soundman is the one who complained first about the hiss and got me going on this topic.

Someone else on a Talkbass forum stated his SR5 also is hissy and sensitive to the treble knob... thus I'm confused. I guess I need to get my hands on a new Bongo and A/B the two.

Here is a snippet from the forum thread I'm referring to...

"Just a thought ... How are the tone controls set on your bass? I could never get used to the amount of hiss my Stingray 5's treble control added. On the rare occasion I needed more highs, I usually added them with my amp."

SR5HH and Bongo 5 HH are the only EBMM basses i own. they are both silent. I usually play the SR5 with the EQ flat, sometimes i'll add a little treble. on the Bongo i'll turn the high mids up a little, and the low mids down a little.

Leave the EQ (tone controls) at the center. Set the volume control to 65%-75% and you should be hiss-free. Once you get hiss-free, adjust EQ sparingly to taste.

Nearly all opamp-based preamps such as we use in electric basses will output hiss when the volume is cranked up all the way. It's pretty much the nature of the beast. All of my basses do this, EBMM or others with notable electronics, and is one reason that active basses should never be cranked up wide open.

If what I've described above does not help, please contact EBMM customer service.

Hope this helps.
