New Member here... with a question

I'm a new member here (I'm normally on TGP and HRI), and, for that matter, new to Ernie Ball guitars (I've used the volume pedals for years, of course). Below is a pic of my new acquisition. It's a Family Reserve Luke with the most ridiculous quilt I've ever seen (Lukather signed the back of the headstock, too). Anyway, I play and teach for a living, and am VERY impressed by the sound of the guitar (it sustains like no guitar I've ever heard, and whatever bad expectations I had about the EMG's went straight out the window as soon as I plugged it up).

BUT, the neck is just a BIT too small for me... I'm used to Tylers and to my R8 Les Paul. So all I'd like to know, given that I'm thinking of selling it, is this: are there some EB's w/larger necks, and are they hard to find?

Welcome here, and welcome to the Luke club! It does have a very nice smallish neck, the AL has a bigger neck but none of the EBMM's are known for big necks, they are all quite small, the JP being the widest. They all rock however!

I need to check out a Tyler some day.....

Hey Mark-

Good to see ya picked up an EBMM. Luke is a great guitar, it's probably the smallest neck of the bunch, though. Most of the necks have more girth to them.

If you're looking for a strat type configuration, you might try the Albert Lee. Really comfy neck, beefier than the Luke. Or the Silhouette Special.

FWIW, Tyler hasn't stopped production. In fact, he's made some stores dealers again.

Man, I'm open to lots of stuff. Amps, guitars, recording gear, whatev. If it's an EB, I'd just need a bigger neck. I was just asking what to get if and when I get another EB, cause judging from this one, they're killer.

Ah, gotcha. Well ... in that case I'd say any of them have a bigger (deeper) neck. Fretboard width wise, they're similar, except the Petrucci which is wider.

Depending on where you are, they're usually pretty easy to find to try out. I'd say check out an Albert Lee (great strat-meets-tele vibe with a killer neck). The Steve Morse model is excellent- my favourite neck of the bunch.

Don't give it up as its a very versatile player, and yes ANY exceptions about EMG's do go out the window. To me even though the neck is small, its uniqueness makes it a special player in my book. Would love to see it as I am local to you.

Neck is chunky, yes, killer sound, kind of a narrow fret-board......I think he's looking for a "wide neck" , not a chunky one. Axis neck is much smaller than what I was previously playing on,...Ibanez Wizard Prestige neck,...however, I like it. If EB Customer Service can get my high E and B string to sit directly over the Pup polepiece it will be perfect, can't wait to get it back...no need for a "Classical Guitar" width neck.

Haven't played on any other Balls,...so,...the Axis neck does have a nice heft to it, not thin and flat like many shred guitars,...more of a "C" shape instead of looking like this " ( " not super wide though, but just enough space between strings to make sense,...very efficient. I actually prefer it now to excessively wide-neck guitars I used to have. I would suggest looking at the EBMM specifications sheets on each guitar, and then you can see what is right for you. As per the EBMM specs,...looks like the Luke has the same neck width specifications of the Axis,......the John Petrucci probably has the widest neck of them all.

Hey Mark,
good to see you here. Its Pat from HRI.
Cool to see you playing an EBMM Luke. Personally I dig the EBMM necks now. Of course I am biased. But I spent alot of time playing and closely looking at these and now I am converted. I sold my Tyler last year cause it was too big. I have small hands and prefer a smaller neck I can wrap my thumb around.

The Albert Lee's I played at the show seemed to fit the bill of what your looking for. It won't be as huge as a Tyler, but def fills the hand a little more.
