I’ve had my new Silhouette Special for a couple of months, but haven’t had a chance to play it with my band until last night. Until then, I had only played it in my basement on a practice amp. First things first….it was very comfortable to play. I got rid of my Axis Super Sport for this very reason and my forearm was happy with the change!
We played for nearly 3 hours and I had zero complaints with the ergonomics. The neck was also comfortable, but I have to say it can’t compare to the Axis Super Sport. Man, the Axis neck was fantastic. That’s not a knock on the Silhouette’s neck but rather a compliment to the Axis.
This is the first guitar I’ve ever owned with a single coil pickup – let alone three single coils! I really debated whether going with a Silhouette (HSH), a Special with HSS or a Special with SSS. I'm glad I went with the SSS config. It exceeded my expectations.
I was playing through my Fender HRD. The neck + middle pickup position was my favorite by far. What an awesome clean setting. After our first song, the drummer said “that guitar sounds awesome”. About half way through our practice, the other guitarist said the same. I used every setting but the bridge-only position.
I seem to recall Rob (Roblinda2) saying that you have to play better with single coils. I’m paraphrasing there…but I can see now what he meant. To me, the slightest alteration in my hand position (where I was picking the strings) made a noticeable change in sound. I also found it harder to hide mistakes than on my past HB equipped guitars. That’s not a complaint at all. I actually look at it as a challenge.
I do need to change the gain settings on my drive channel to match up with the Silhouette. It didn’t seem to have the same bite or sustain that the Axis SS had. I kind of expected that going to single coils. It wasn’t a huge difference and most of my stuff is played with clean sounds or very little overdrive. It was just the heavier stuff that sounded a bit thinner.
Overall, I’m loving the Silhouette. I would have never imagined owning a guitar with an S-S-S configuration, but I’m glad I do. I WILL own another EBMM with HB’s. Perhaps the 25th, a used 20th, Gold Roller, or maybe a JP6….but the Silhouette Special isn’t going anywhere.
Great guitar EBMM!
