Hi there.

I currently own two musicman guitars, a JP6 and silo special and im looking at purchasing a new amp. I am into music of the heavier kind and im looking at purchasing a rivera knucklehead 55 head to be played through my cab which is a mesa 212 verticle slant with v60's in it. Im just wondering what peoples opinions on this mix would be, the guitar i use most is my silo. Can i get pretty saturated tones from the Rivera knucklehead 55, with a mesa cab and the silo special?

Thanks alot, Pete.

I have never used the Knucklehead 55 but I have used the KR100 witch is basically the same thing but a 100 watts and it sounded pretty sweet. I was also using the K412T with Vintage 30 and the Power Sub 2 to add some bass response. I did feel that with out the sub the Rivera lacked bottom end. Even at extreme load volumes. The Knucklehead series I feel are a grate amp for playing a good mix of rock. They do not get too heavy but do not sound wussy excluding the KR7 Mick Thomson Signature Series witch is a gain monster. On how would describe it is that they are a Marshall on steroids. If that makes sense. If you want your balls to scream I would look at the KR7 because it has a little bit more versatile I think and if dose a option to switch it down to 50 , 25, or 12 watts.

Pointer,

Here's the thing buddy. Whatever amp you do get, be sure the foundation is 6L6 power tubes!! Yes, EL34 can and are used, but, the genuine is 6L6.

That is a critical building block for that sound you want, i.e., Dual Rectifier, etc. . . You can always change pickups in & out - so pick the MM guitar you like - it's easy.

Strings Nickel wrap; you're on your way

Oh, VHT CL/100 Pittbull Head (EL34's) but gets the low extremely well - EXCELLENT amp!!

Colinboy,

I have that SAME amp!!! If you "re-direct" the speakers when playing that amp flat out "KICKS . . . . . . ."!!!!! It's toooooooooo edgy coming straight at you, so off set the speaker path to the ears - you'll love it!!

I have a JCM 900 100w head and a new VHT 100w head, and that little guys (for it's size) smokes!!

6l6 PT typically will highlight the scooped mids, more depth, more demension; the EL34's highlight the mids, edgyness, growl, presence.

Both great tubes!!

Thanks for the advice TNT but what do you mean by redirecting the speaker?facing the amp away from in front of me???

The DSL401 is a good amp (I have one for more than 5 years), but the speaker is just average.
Did you try to play with a cabinet ? It changes everything. :D
A 1x12 combo does not move a lot of air (I'm not speaking of sound volume but of sound presence). If you play in a band, you need an extension cab.
I own also a Fender Blues Deville (a 4x10 combo) and without playing louder than with my DSL401, my bandmates can hear me better. Better sound diffusion.
Thus get a cab !

Colinboy,

Here's a little secret of the trade. Rediredting speakers changes "everything" no matter what the speaker.

You can accomplish this several ways - and see for yourself!! And, this is mainly designed to get rid of that awful "edgy, sharp, abrasive, scratchy" sound produced by most speakers.

You can turn the speakers at an angle away from a straight path to the ears; or re-position the speakers inside the cabinet the same way, but this will still "look" like the cab is facing straight out to the audience.

SRV used to place a piece of cardboard over the center of the cone area, trying to accomplish this, however, it eliminates too many frequencies.

I face my DSL 401 at a 45*angle upwards towards me when I jam, and usually from the side or front of me NOT in back of me.

The difference is HUGE!!!!!!! :)

You can substitute the 6L6's and all that's necessary is the amp be rebiased
*immediately* afterwards.

What's the model number of this knucklehead? Is it a K55 or is it a KR55?
