Regarding resale guitars...

Have you guys taken a good look at the sales trends for the "For Sale" and "Ebay/Craigslist" threads? The predominant sales items tend to be newer Axis and JPs. Some ALs and a few Morses, but a negligible amount of newer Silos and Silo Specs.

Why is this, you think? Is it because these are not as hot as the Axis and JPs, therefore are less available? or are they so treasured by their owners (like me ) and are rarely let go? I've been trying to find a "like new" Silo with trem RW or another more affordable SIlo Spec for a HH mod job, but it's almost impossible.

So what do you think?

You may have a point there, or there may just not be as many around. I finally got to check out a white Silo up close and it was really calling my name. I don't know, I make informed decisions when buying, if I don't like something anymore after 10 years or so I may sell it.

Perhaps you might find one of the Sterling by MusicMan Silo's to be exactly what you are looking for. I would be excited to try one as soon as they hit the stores.

I got the same impression, but I guess the different Axis models as well as the JP are the most selling models, too. Maybe that's why those make most part of the appearances in the for sale / craigslist threads.
Same for Ebay at least here in Europe. You get heaps of Axis & JP stuff, but Silo (especially the "Special" Version) is a rather hard find...

Nevertheless I must say, owning some Silo Specials as well as ASS & AS models, I'd rather part with the Axis sisters than with the Silo Specs as those Silos are the guitars that attract me the most and suit my tonal and playing tastes best.

I think it's all relative to supply. My guess is that if you had the sales figures from EBMM, the Axis and JP series of guitars sell in the highest volume which means therer are more of them. If you go into a store that stocks EBMM guitars, you're almost always sure to find a few Axis/Axis Super Sports, and JP's -- and usually a Luke. But the Morse, Silhouette, and AL tend to be pretty scarce.

Now, that could play into your theory though. When I was contemplating selling my ASS, I remember a forum member saying "Sell the ASS, you can always find another one of those". I agreed, but I don't feel the same way about the Silhouette

there are way more Axissss and JPs sold, so therefore you will see more for sale.

A combination of both I think. Maybe the Silo, being a more obscure guitar than the others, attracts only informed buyers who know exactly what they're getting and won't sell it. Plus the neck is universal, and if you don't like the pups, it's the easiest to mod.

Back to the point, though - yeah, I believe to remember correctly that Axis and JP are the most popular EBMMs, hence they are sold more and there are more of them on the used market. On the other hand, I feel there are some interesting silos on the E-Bay every now and again, so I beleive if I wanted a used silo I would deffinitely find one in a month's time. But maybe it's just me - I've never bought a "new" guitar in a shop so far...

The Silo supply definitely comes and goes. I watch e-Bay pretty frequently and there are times when there is maybe 1 or 2 for sale...and then a week later there may be 6 or more.

The most elusive (IMO) are the AL's and Morses.

Absolutely right on the Morse and Al!

I remember looking for a Morse for over half a year in 1999 (and that in Cologne, that has some of the biggest instrument stores in Europe), then I've found one - it was still a 6-Bolt (1999!), totally blew me away, but did cost way too much for me at that time. Very sad und unnerved that I will never have the money to buy it, a week later I walked into a rather small shop and asked if they had any EBMM in store. They sad yes, one used, and it was ... my Morse. Talking about considence/destiny - that was the only time I've seen a used Morse in any shop in Cologne untill now, and I do visit them frequently!

Could it be that most Silo Special owners tend to hang on to them? Or hang on to them longer?

I think a lot of people "collect" the Axis's due to the EVH aspect of it. These people are more likely to buy, then sell, then buy again, etc.

Conversely, I think of the Silo's as more of a "players" guitar. No name associated with them, just a great players guitar. Fewer reasons to buy one aside from purely the playability/sound aspect.

Since I am always right half of the time on odd numbered days that don't include any days in the month of January or March, I'd say this must be it.


Also, noticed a bunch of hardtails for sale recently. Very cool.

Its a popularity thing, JP and Axis seem to be more popular and more of them out there the ASS as well, then the Luke, all in all if you want a MM of any type they can be found easily on the second hand market, not that I am in a buying mode nowdays but I always look around at the various outlets.

The White Silo & Piezo 20th will never go.
Have been thinking about selling the non-piezo 20th for a 25th, but will probably just keep it and buy a 25th (or the follow-up production model) anyways.

The Pet & BFR Pet might go in a real crisis.

The Axis just isn't for me :

I sold 2 Axii (1 Axis & 1 ASS).

My NOS Trans Blue EVH doesn't come out of the case - if it wasn't mint I'd have sold it.

If they issue the Silo Spec, I might consider. But loving the SS as I do, I think I'll end up being a snob when it comes to this. The Sterling line SS will have to jump through some pretty touch hoops for me. Heh...

In the case of the JPs, maybe the fact that people want to pick up a BFR. Same goes for anytime you see a Luke or whatever. But then again, could be just people need money.
