Alright,

I'm curious to know what you all think is the best sounding/responding Bass EFX gear out there. I don't play with any, but was thinking about it...

I've tried many and likewise have owned and sold many including the 2 you've mentioned, however, (and this is purely a matter of personal taste), we bassists aren't guitar players, hence for everyday work, I don't really like any effects between my StingRay and the amp, with the exception of a decent compression pedal (like the one I am selling if you click on my signature) and an Ashdown Chorus+

Other effect which are equally good, and that you didn't mention are:

Zoom B2.1u mulit-effect with the expression pedal
Harmonix auto wah, and if you play live through a mixing board you want to have a SansAmp Bass D1+ cab emulator.

My large board:

DSC00005.jpg

Signal goes from right to left:

1 - Korg DT-10 Tuner
2 - Ampeg SCP-OCT Octaver (the best in the world)
3 - Moog MF-101 Lowpass-Filter (the best in the world)
4 - Alfred Bass Overdrive (handmade not available anymore)
5 - MXR Phase 100 (a 90 would do as well...)

-> into MarkBass F1 w. SansAmp RBI in the rack

My small board:

Signal goes right to left:

1 - Korg DT-3 Tuner
2 - MXR M-88 Bass Octave
3 - EHX Q-Tron+ XO
4 - MXR Phase 90
5 - Moog MF-105B Bass MuRF (totally sick)
6 - Tech 21 SansAmp PBDDI

-> into Minimark (or whatever is available)

The large board is now reassembled on my small board, and lost the TC Chorus. I hardly ever used it anyway.

I love that Q-tron! Have one myself as well. It sounds so good combined with a Stingray.
Also use the memoryman from EH. Stunning good sounding thing.

And definitly sounds better than most of the modern digital divices wich are too clean. No balls. :p
If your sound is important to you. (if you've got to make a living with music)
Buy quality effects hehe. Good analog or good (read expensive) digital effects. Others wont hold up when amplified over a big PA.

I'm a fan of foogers too, I should NOT have sold my MuRF.

I just had a change of mind and decided to sell all my effects. Looking at pedalboards is starting to make me regret that.

I recently purchased a Line 6 M13, which is simply put, every stompbox modeler they make in one box. It's pretty cool- you should check it out!

You beat me to it.

If you truly want effects (and not amp modeling or other fancy pants stuff like that), the Line6 M13 is the one to get. It's an effects modeler. It essentially combines their four 4 button pedals (plus one or two other) into one unit.

What makes this genius is the user interface. The unit has 75 different effects. You can assign any 12 of them to the buttons and play four of them in any order. When you look down you can see not only which effects are enabled but how that effect is configured.

The unit has an effect loop for any of your speciality pedals. And the loop can be assigned anywhere in the effects chain.

Plus it has a useable tuner and a looper.

If you're into effects, it worth looking into.

I use a Boss ME-50B Multi Effects unit. I don't need it for every song, just the occasional one and does a great job. Plus the tuner and volume pedal are very useful.

This from a guy who played for forty years without any kind of effects unit and never thought he'd ever have the need for one.

1. With active basses, running through additional modelling preamps like the GT-6B or Pod is unnecessary and will just muddy your sound, in my opinion and experience. If you are using one of these units, just use the effects and not the preamp/emulation section.

2. In terms of which effects will sound good with EBMM basses, it depends on the type of music you're playing, and the quality of the particular pedal or multi FA you are using. Aim for pedals that have true bybass so they don't suck signal or tone, and gain an understanding of the impact that running effects in a different order can have on your sound. If your amp has an effects send and return, use it.

My current setup is pictured below. I only use the Sansamp preamp for passive basses. The tuner, compressor and Sansamp go direct to my amp's input, while the other pedals are in my amps effect's loop. I've recently replaced the Agent 00Funk for a second AD-9 delay, since the Pink Floyd tribute I'm playing with is quite delay-heavy.

Kajagoogoo and Talk Talk

Hey all,

Thanks for your input. I play a MarkBass setup, so there is no need for amp modeling. The reason this came about was because I am a fan of pop music from the eighties, and I really like the sound Nick Beggs of Kajagoogoo had in this clip: (I think it's Chorus/Flanger) Click on the link if it does not work.

This I like also, but I don't know what it is. I think it's some kind of Oscillator effect(?):

I there a plain old octaver built in there???

Unfortunately, no. Someone on another forum posted a work around for one of the filter models. It sound like an octaver, but it still doesn't do it for me 100%.

Syciprider,
I'd be dead-set frightened to put my foot anywhere near that in a live situation!
This is from the old bloke that has a Boss TU-2 for an effect pedal.
Mind you, it freakin' looks awsome!!

haha +1 from another old bloke who probably tried them all and thought they were all a gimmik.

Chain me me to a ship mast, bass in hand, straight through a decent amp and I become all the effects I ever need :D
