I have been enjoying some time off work in the last 2 weeks, business is on a bit of a downtime as it always is at the beginning of the new year, car manufacturers are struggling and production is low so we get less shipments and get to spend more time at home with family and basses.

Whats' a man to do but play more bass?

As some of you know I've recently got this monster machine called the Bongo 5HHp, the thing scares me, ok? There! I admit it. So I have been threading on egg shells trying to tame it, approching with garlic and holy water. I have been constantly A/B-ing between "IT" and the StingRay5, soon as it bites I run back to the Ray with the tail between my legs :)

At the beginning I felt a bit confused, the preamp controls were slightly complicated for me. Now, at last I am slowly starting to familiarize with 2 of the most important controls which I think are the heart of this bass i.e. the low and high mids. Bass and treble, yeah we can all understand what they do, you either + or - some in order to "edge" either ends of the spectrum, but... by God Allmighty, thanks to those 2 mids controls I am able to customize sound shapes like a sculptor. And what I find most peculiar about all this, is that the Bongo is also helping me to appreciate what a great instrument the Stingray5 is, while this is all hi-tech and super duper leading edge design, when you pickup the Ray again, it feels like you're wearing your favourite comfort slippers & blanket, and something tells you, yeah you've been to the dark side and survived it, now you are rewarded with that unmistakable "welcome home" sensation you get, where everyone loves you and you really belong. Until the next time you "go there" of course, this is your life. Ahhh bliss.

To me the StingRay5 is like a machete, there's nothing it won't cut through, the Bongo on the other end, I compare to a Swiss Army knife, it will cut, chisel, uncork your wine bottle, open your beer bottles, cut your fingernails, tweez stuff, grip-pliers your nuts, cross head and flat head all your screws, toothpick and dental floss, sharpen stuff, points to the north with its compass, and even sew your buttons if you know how to. That's about it. If you have more please tell. ;)

In conclusion, I can't praise enough the enjoyment I get from owning a product of a company that makes these great basses and guitars, and keep us all hooked, thanks to the genius of Ernie Ball and Sterling Ball we are all blessed with one of life treasures that will be hard to forget when we are old. We are only here on borrowed time so we must make the best we can with the best tools we can get. Loving it.
Long live EBMM

I just can't put 'em down

I, too, was scared of the Bongo....at first. Previous forays were limited to Stingray-land. I consider the Bongo moving out towards the edge. :)

The Stingray might be like a machete, but, given the right finessing, the Bongo is like a rocket launcher. And you don't bring a knife to a gunfight!
Play with it some more.

Cool, CaptMoto. Interesting reading about the process. I'd like to now take this opportunity to, with the very best of intentions, refer back to a thread of yours from not so very long ago at all:

I have the best so why look for more?

Sorry, I couldn't resist. No malicious intentions at all - it's just that when it comes to these things (Bongos in particular), I just love sayin "told ya so". :) There's one person in particular I'm waiting patiently and confidently to say that to ... you know who you are. ;)

Keep your chin up RobertB, yours was an accurate observation of one of my past comments, so don't worry I won't hold it against you, it's fair that you commented that way.

Although it's also true that while I like the Bongo A LOT, my heart is still very much attached to the StingRay5 and to my other 2 **S's because you see many people buy and sell their guitars, and I have done it myself, I have owned about 13 of them, and the few ones I have kept, I did it because I couldn't do without them. At the end of the day you can only drive one car at the time and play one bass at the time, and unless you are a collector who owns 20 - 30 basses just for collection purpose, it would be inpractical and expensive to have that many basses that you are hardly going to play.

As I said in the last line of the first post, I can't put them down, neither of them.

Cheers
Fran

The bongo is a beast....for my stlye of music....it is the only weapon of choice for me. Every time I thump the bongo at sound check...heads turn to see what just raised the heat in the place....gotta love that!

You have two awesome basses that have their own character. The best of both world's I would say. Cool thread bro.

Capt...THe mid controls are the bomb but the blend control is the secret weapon

I believe you are right there Mr. BP, but then this bass has even another secret weapon I had not mentioned and that is the piezo of "mass destruction" lol

Oh yeah fan-bleepin'-tastic! ;)

Fran, kudos for being a good sport about my comment. After all, the intent was inter-bongoloid bonding, rather than any kind of "slam". And I do understand and relate to your dual affinity for the Bongo and the SR5. I feel exactly the same way with mine. Yes, the Stealth Bongo is being shipped out tomorrow, but a new single H will take its place.

Peace, Grace & Bass!

Shame on you all. The more you write, the more I want a bongo. If only there was one in town to try out.
