Hey guys. I'm looking for some inspiration. Qualifications have a tendency to kill good suggestions, so just fire away, please! Anything.

suggestions as they come to mind:
- find insipiring people to be with you
- change the lighting around you
- new strings
- bring your gear in another room and play
- do something you never done before
- go see a show from a style of music you are less familiar with
- read BP's blog posts
- turn off the tv

Take your bass and head for the nearest subway/bus station with only enough money to get there. Play until you at least have enough scratch to get home.

It's the Metro to you Montrealers (Go Habs Go). ;)

Drugs are supposed to give inspiration.

But, take the dog out or something. I actually have a friend who has ALL his best ideas whilst he is in the toilet...

- Try fretless
- Try one more string
- Learn lines from a famous bass player you've not yet checked out
- Start driving/wandering and just see where the roads/paths take you
- Visit a monastery

Thanks for the suggestions. Imma try a few and see where it gets me.

It's for a novella, by the way.

Listen to foreign music, especially latin stuff - cumbia or really hot salsa, stuff where the American sense of "one TWO three FOUR" is thrown out of whack. Learn the bass parts.

Find a well-written biography of a famous person and read it.

Spend a day taking photos lying on the ground. Your perspective will thank you.

Paint a picture, even if you don't paint.

Volunteer. I spent an entire year visiting Americans in foreign prisons. It was one of the best (and most horrible) things I'd ever done.

Write a letter to an old relative - a really LONG letter, full of details. Mail it.

1) Watch TV on "mute" (works better if you choose a station you don't often watch, even moreso if you turn on a program/movie in the middle and have no idea what's happening); try to figure out what's happening without any dialogue to guide you

2) Write a story and then try to adapt it to music (It worked in my first band, to some extent)

3) Change the environment in which you practice (the room you're in, the chair, etc. you're sitting on, etc.)

4) Play a phrase of music on one instrument, then go get another instrument with a contrasting tone and sound and play it again, then build on it (Personal example: Started with 5-string fretted bass, then got my fretless out, then went to my second-hand-store 8-string (octave-fundamental stringing))

5) When writing lyrics, consider bizarre and unconventional subjects to write about (This also worked well in my first band)

6) Go for a walk; or get in your car and drive way out of town for a few hours, perhaps in a direction you've never taken to a place you've never been -- then interact with the locals
