Pete thanks for helping out with the info!

yes Pete is correct, plain grain maple for the necks. The finish is a very thin acrylic satin finish. It's just enough to protect the wood, but still feels like raw or oiled wood. once in a while we do see some flame and or light birdseye grains. but most will be good quality plain grain maple.

fingerboard radius is 10". frets are a medium jumbo, has decent height to grab the string. a little wider than what you see on the USA EBMM instruments.

Hello Pat,

Thank you for making yourself available to us on the forums. I've always liked the fact that BP actively participates in the boards, and I'm glad to see that you are also a hands-on kind of guy.

I'm going to be purchasing an AX40 from Bruce at Cherry St. I've owned 4 EBMM Axis', and I'm a huge fan of that guitar.

Based on what I'm seeing, I'm certian that I will love the AX40, but I do have one question about the guitar's construction:

The EBMM Axis has a relatively thick piece of maple for the cap. I know that the quilt maple veneer will be super-duper thin, but does it have a peice of un-figured maple under the veneer that is the same thickness as the EBMM Axis? The reason I ask, is that I've always believed that the tone of the Axis is due in large part to the marriage of the Basswood and the the Maple cap, and I believe the thickness of the maple cap to be important to that equation.

Regardless of the answer, I'll still be purchasing one. My hope is that when I'm holding the instrument, I won't be able to tell a difference between the feel of the Axis to the AX40. If that happens, I will be your biggest cheerleader.

Will post my impressions of the guitar when I get it.

Again Pat, Thanks for your continued participation in the boards.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for your questions.
The AX40 does not have an extra maple cap underneath the quilt maple veneer. So the body is comprised of mostly basswood with a thin quilt maple veneer on top. You are correct there can be some tonal differences with a thinner maple top. I haven't done any direct comparisons, but the AX40 does sound good and very balanced to my ears. I have so far played our samples thru a Engl (Steve Morse amp?) an old Marshall JCM800 at pretty good volumes and was pleased with the way it handled high gain loud tones and how it cleaned up when working the volume knobs.

Thanks
Pat

we'll probably start up a small forum on our site. I think BP and EBMM have been very generous in letting us talk about Sterling by Music Man in this forum.

I think you should just stay here keep it all in the family

Yeah, Pat we'll set you up with an in-law unit here!!

Besides, with limited time to socialize on the forum, it'd be too much pain to hop in the car and drive over to your neighborhood.

Plus, you can't beat the rent!! lol, lol, lol
