Hey all,

Well, I just about gave myself a heart attack, all in the name of getting a Bongo. Let me explain:

I had a Desert Gold Bongo HH about a year ago that I foolishly sold after my band broke up. I've missed it ever since, and even contacted the guy I sold it to to see if I could buy it back... he had since sold it. Fast forward to this week- I had an audition with a cover band that I was ill-prepared for. These guys are about as professional as musicians get around here, and I wasn't up to snuff... didn't learn the songs well enough, got nervous, I thought I blew the whole gig. Well, I told the guys as much, and by some miracle they invited me back, albeit with low expectations (their words, paraphrased). THIS time, I studied the songs, the nuances and played them verbatim the best I could.... and blew them away. It was a complete 180 for me, and I was extremely excited! I got the call last night that I got the gig. It's a pretty serious, well paying gig, so I'm stoked!

Now, this may seem off-topic, but I assure you, there is a point to all this.

Since I got the gig, I was looking to add another bass to the arsenal. I was originally eyeing a V*ri*x bass since I need a bunch of different tones for a bunch of different songs. Tonight while I was looking online, I realized that a Bongo would suit me just great with this gig, as it's flexibility is second-to-none. I cruise on over to the Guitar Center website, browse the used section, and find a couple that look interesting. Found a Stealth 5HH in Virginia, I believe, that I almost snagged. That is, until I looked in my inbox....

I was looking a couple weeks ago and emailed a GC in Arizona for pics of a "Pewter" Bongo they had. Pics came in, it's Sapphire Black (nice color!), but I didn't have the means to buy it. Tonight, I think to myself, "self, you already have a black SR5, and a Stealth Bongo, while cool, is not your thing. Check on the Bongo the guy emailed pics of to you". I open the pics, and low and behold, the Bongo is not an HH like I originally thought, but an HHp!!!!! As soon as I saw that, I called them and told them to run my card, and send that puppy to daddy!

Only one problem.... when they run my card, it comes back as being denied.... what? I have a substantial enough line that will more than cover the bass, so what gives? I go online to check my account, and for some reason, my available balance is like $35!!!!! I thought it was a misprint, as the current balance is pretty low, especially compared to the credit line. Okay, so I call customer service and talk to a very nice lady who I could barely understand. I think she says there were 3 transactions recently, totally several thousand dollars, but the last time I made a purchase was October of last year..... CRAP!!!! Someone stole my identity and has gone on a GC shopping spree!!!!!!! Or so I thought.

I called customer service again, this time spoke to a nice gentleman who I was able to understand a bit more (I can't imagine how they understand us, either!) who said there were 3 seperate transactions that had yet to clear. I asked "when were they made?" to which he replied, tonight around 6pm, and all 3 are for the same amount.... so here's the deal- the guy at GC charged my card 3 times for the Bongo before trying a 4th time and getting declined!!!! While I still need to clear that up, it was a huge weight off my shoulders, as it was an honest mistake, and not someone stealing from me! I was so relieved!

After that fiasco, I realized.... I CAN STILL GET THE BONGO!!!! woohoo!

So yeah, crazy night, but in the end, a beautiful Bongo 5HHp, Sapphire Black w/ Black Ice pg is on it's way to me!!!!

Sorry for the novel, just had to get it off my chest!

Good choice and should I say also lucky choice I have a Sapphire black HHp like yours, it came with a moonstone p/guard which I since changed to white ice because the moonstone was not my cup of whatever... congratulations.

Although I am still baffled as to how they managed to run your card 3 times without the bank calling you to ensure this was a genuine transaction, they get suspicious over here and they phone you when these things happen to protect you.

Here is what a sapphire black hhp looks like.....

I am sure BP that in time Bongo's will be as popular as StingRays, and I tell you for why: guitar players... yep them! they are beginning to notice how good a Bongo sounds on their recordings so soon enogh Bongo's will be in demand in recording studios, I already know that when my Bongo was delivered to me in an electric guitar store that doesn't sell basses that all the guitarist in there were astonished by its sound and said that they will spread the news about this bass to their respective bass players, so I reckon it's only a matter of time and a few more positive reviews in prominent magazines, will help make this instrument one of the most popular out there.

Thanks from me.

The tone was always tops on my list, but the bass itself reminded me a bit too much about my band breakup, which was pretty messy, so I liquidated it and a bunch of other gear. Despite that, I still wish I would've kept it. In the end though, I ended up with a nicer, more versatile Bongo than I had before, so it all worked out.

BP, it is funny how things come around full circle. I went in the complete opposite direction after selling the first Bongo, and got a bass that was rooted in the 60's (wink wink). The tone was good, but something was missing (flexibility?). Bongos are amazing instruments, and I hope they stay for good. I had a bad feeling when I heard about GC not carrying them, of the Bongo going the way of the Cutlass or Sabre, but I sincerely hope not. Keep it up BP, you're truly an innovator in a time when duplication is a much more popular art form. I think time will tell us just how great an innovator you (and your team, of course) really are.

As for what somebody said about guitar players keeping the Bongo around or whatever, I'm trying to do my part...lol. My band's guitar player has a L*kland bass for sale and is looking to get a Music Man of some kind. I played my SR5 for the auditions and he really liked the tone, but I told him about the Bongo tone, which he probably never would've thought of, as the looks aren't his thing. Hopefully this new addition will push him over the edge!

Thats right BP, for me it's the tone. You guys did an amazing job with this bass. I might have turned a fellow SR player from a band we played with last night into a possible Bongo player, he was really impressed with my tone:D
