hello, I need to be able to tune to C standard (C-F-A#-D#), in order to play with some guys. I was wondering what the best Ernie Ball set for this would be?

thanks!

i think i saw something about one gauge heavier for each halftone in the faq.. now that could have been for guitar..
for c tuning id say a 115 to 50 set should do fine. might be a tad loose so if you prefer more resistance go 125 ;)

Personally, I always just used my regular 105s for every tuning from Standard to drop C, but this doesn't seem to be for everyone.

Id want the heaviest I could find at least a 110 if not a 115, a bass player who is in our studio right now has a Sterling and he is using 110's....I was playing it and cause of the low note there isnt that much tension which leads to set up issues and higher action.

You adjust your tuning on one bass alot? Do you adjust for intonation up the neck when you do this?

I Just tuned a Bongo cfa#d#ab, and it plays very nicely with the normal Slinkys (45-65-80-100-130). Then again I often tune it down to Bb with the same strings, and that feels good too, so I guess you could safely go to anything down to 50-115 or so...

I used to play in C-G-C-F and I used the Power Slinky's, the 110 gauge string worked out well. Now I play in B-F#-B-E, and I had to get my stingray set up with a 5 string set, and use the 4 heaviest gauge strings. The low B is a 130, I think this may be a bit too heavy if I were to tune up higher. Hope this helped.

I haven't had to go lower then Drop D on my Stingray yet, but before I got it my band's guitarists tended to write in 1 step down and drop C, and I was more inclined to Drop D and Standard, while there were also quite a few Alice in Chains songs played, which usually required 1/2 step down, and I always tried to learn songs in their right tunings (I'm a tab learner). I only had 2 basses then, and one (My first) rarely got played, mostly the Yamaha. I never changed strings (At that time I was a GHS 105 player) and never adjusted intonation and never had a problem with string buzz, and personally I never really noticed a whole lot of tension differences.

Basically, my strategy was plug in the tuner, tune to what was needed (Excluding Drop D from Standard, and Drop C from 1 step down), and play.

I tune to Drop C and use GHS Heavy Boomers (.050 .070 .095 .115)

For standard C tuning I would recommend Power Slinky's (.055 - .110)

I play standard, drop D, and drop C on my Stingrays with Ernie Ball Slinky 105's no problem.
