22/24 frets and their effect on tone

Hey guys. I have always heard that there is a tonal difference between 22 and 24 fret guitars. I know that in the last 8 years I have bene drawn to 22 fret guitars as whole reguardless of if it had sinngle coils or hummers. So what are the differences? I ask because BP has a made a refference to an HSS Gold Roller and now I have a major gas problem but it's a 24 fretter

(Disregard this) I'll bet that there is zero difference in tone between the two. 24 frets rocks!

The difference is the position of the neck pickup. On a 24 fretter, it's moved further towards the bridge. That little bit of distance makes a noticeable difference.

Otto, BP forgot to put commas in that post, the Gold Roller is mini HH. You should read the post this way:

they are gold roller, single h (25th bass), two h (25th bass), hss 25th bass, repeat with fretless....then repeat with 5 string then repeat with 5 string fretless then repeat with fret less lined....then go to the stealth stingrays and jps and then go to the 25th guitar trem then no trem then trem maple no trem rosewood.....Big al bass rosewood big al bass maple

Im not picking on yo Lionel but I cannot please you junkies sometimes. No other company has come out with the number of new models in the last five years in the history of our industry and its still not enough or in the right order....

With that said let's keep the tread alive because even with no Hss GR the question is still valid.

I prefer 22 but after playing a Silo again at the Dallas Guitar show have an interest in the 24, there is a difference mainly in the neck pup and Otto, gold roller yummy

He's talking about the 25th bass, I (edited) above.

In basic regards to pickup placement...

Think of the open string vibrating in a figure 8, with the center node/axis at the 12th fret - exactly halfway between the bridge and nut. This puts the widest point of the figure 8 halfway between the 12th fret and the bridge, exactly where the prime pickup placement is on a 22 fret guitar. You get a very full and round tone from a pickup in this position. Moving the pickup more towards the bridge to fit in another 2 frets results in a slightly brighter sound.

I notice it... Alot.
But it's not necessarily bad just different... and you get increase playability.
Play one, do some A/B-ing.. And go from there.

What is that difference?

Everybody else has summed it up pretty well. In a nutshell, the more you move a pickup to the bridge, the more trebly it gets. The more towards the neck, the more bassy.

ALSO due to the fact to were the the neck pick up is placed on a 22 fret (strat's mainly)guitar, When you are only using the neck p/up it won't pick up any open harmonics on the 5 fret where if you switch it to the brigde it will!! this is why i don't like strats anymore.

to me its not a huge deal because once you fret notes the relationship between the scale length and and pup position changes. you might find your favorite notes have changed and i dont think one is better or worse...what is better is that it is usually easier to reach upper register frets on a 24 fret guitar

Personally speaking, I have never found a 24 fret guitar that had a satisfactory neck pickup sound to my ears. They lose their 'goo' if you know what I mean!
