I like it. It fits the newer things they've been doing lately.

I agree...it is a bit Metallica-esque

The solo is killer

Can't wait for the super special edition I'm getting :D

I'm having trouble getting the download but I'm jazzed about the album too...and I'm on board for the Super Special Edition as well.

I can't but help think this isn't the final album mix... it just doesn't sound as compressed as their last few albums. But who knows.

I have trouble signing up for a "special edition" of an album I've never heard. Of course I'd buy a super special edition of any one of my favorite albums, but to me with the possibility that the album I've never heard will prove totally mediocre, I refuse to spend more than the most minimum amount! Am I the only one?

You're probably not the only one. You underestimate how far fandom can go...I consider myself the BIGGEST Dream Theater fan I know...so I have to buy the Deluxe Collector's edition that comes with 3 CDs, 2 vinyl discs, etc...

Not the only one. When it comes to CD releases. I just go to Best Buy and pick up new releases at their low 13 bucks a pop price. But I can see how bk sees it from a fan's perspective.

Which I am a huge fan too, but I'm a college student and I don't have the means to spend on special edition perks and such. I save up for two things:

1. CD
2. Tickets.

I typically do the same, except with a handful of artists. Dream Theater is one...I save for the album releases as well as the platinum ticket packages...

I totally understand, though. Being a student takes time and money...and sometimes you have neither...

yeah, I can see where your coming from but for me DT can't release a bad album. I still Like FII for what it is and really theres only one song I can't stand to listen too on it. But yeah, I got the limited edition and the super deluxe edition preordered twice on two different sites just to be safe (I know, sad huh)
:D
As far as a rite to passage goes I like it. I love the guitar part in the second verse I believe it is and I like rudess' crazy Nintendo solo thing. But I hope the rest of the songs are different.

Spoilers in this post! Skip if you want to hear the album and make your own impression first.

My first impression is: This is nore of SC which I grew tired of and came to dislike compared to older albums. The guitars are too scooped, the middle section has no conection with the main song and the main song itself is kinda prefab (verse/chorus/verse/chorus etc). It's still DT and I still like it more than anything else, but come on, where's the DT of old that tried something different on each album and showed so much spark on each?

BTW, for me less compression is good, I've always though DT's albums had too much. I still hear a volume drop when the guitars come in, so the compression is still there.

No, I actually can listen to the first minute of it because I don't mind the beginning, lol, but the rest of the song is barbaric. I guess I should have said two songs, but the one I cant stand is "you, not me". Its just way to poppy and I think it competes with the backstreet boys back in the day.:D

For me solo sounds "root evilish" at least backing track and it realy sounds like its B side of "Octavarium" and "Systematic Chaos".The song itself isnt bad but that doesnt improve my seeking for Petrucci's tone. I think that im still under impression of a tone from Awake, SFAM, IaW where he had plenty of ideas but asked answered "i dont really remember the settings... " haha :)

it´s a cool song, but nothing special and nothing new at all.
after the lyrics "Turn the key walk through the gate The great ascent to reach a higher state" i thought james would sing "or are you unforgiven, too?" like jamez does after the lines " what I've felt, what I've known Sick and tired, I stand alone Could you be there, 'cause I'm the one who waits for you"

i don´t like the guitar tone so much, sounds very 80s trash-metal like to me.

Someone should add that, haha.

I'm a huge DT fan but this song doesn't hit me very well and either did the entire last album... Strange though that I love Octavarium.

Everything on Awake was double-tracked, i.e. 4 rhythm tracks panned hard stereo... so you can just give up now :)

Octavarium you could tell had a lot of feelings and vibes coming in from SFAM.

Not every album will be Images and Words and SFAM. It feels like this record is heading more in the Train of Thought direction.

Well from what I've heard so far at least.

I guess I'm not as alone as I thought. I didn't like Systematic Chaos - and I don't care for the new tune either. Octavarium was the last album I really connected with. I REALLY loved IAW, SFAM, SDOIT, and TOT. I even liked Infinity. I also find it interesting that Octavarium was the last album with the old label. I really hope they're not getting pushed around by their new label. :(
