I used to tune to Drop C on my yamaha 4 string using GHS Flea Signature strings (.105s) and never had a problem.* I haven't tried going lower then Drop D on my Stingray yet, but I'm sure if the Yamaha could do it, the Stingray, or any other MM bass could do it twice as well. Of course, I'm pretty sure this is personal... but if it were me doing the recomendation I'd say Super Slinkies or the EB .105 gauge strings (Sorry, dunno the name).

*I apologise for the string of blasphemy in that sentence, it was before EB or EBMM truely entered my life. I was young and naive.

Please don't hurt me.:D

Half of our set is tuned C# standard, but what I do is tune up a step and a half and just use the reg slinkys 130-45. It works great and it doesnt feel too tight. I would recommend this way of tuning because you can can have crazy low action with no fret buzz. You'll have to tweak the neck of course, but it works great for me.

Why don't you just buy a Ernie Ball Music Man 5 string bass? No more detuning, no more "issues," just killer tone!

I never had any trouble with loose strings back then to my knowledge. Maybe I did and just didn't realize. Anyways, I never used heavy gauge strings. Just regulars. Good luck in your search for Strings.
