I know the Dargie 2 and Big Al are big news, but the tried and true Stingrays are still the bomb, and there are some KILLER clearance deals on them at Guitar Center right now.

The one by my house had some that were two or three years old that were discounted really heavily.

I am weak and was not able to resist, of course.

You should stop by your local Guitar Center and see what they have to offer, you might be surprised.

I may well end up purchasing Rex's brand new Big AL, that he hasn't even seen and purchased from Pete DuBaldo, as a result of Rex's GC excursion.

I picked up my SR5 last year when GC was clearing out the new (old) basses. Got a killer deal. I've already bought 2 Bongo's this year and to avoid a nasty divorce, I might just stay away. But then again...

I went to GC and was very disappointed. No deals on the 2 musicman basses they had on the wall. They had 30 fender basses and only 2 musicman? One 4 string sterling and one 5 string stingray. $1600 for the stingray and no deals. The poor thing had the back of the peghead where you would hang it up so scratched that I wouldn't have paid them 1/2 of what they were asking. I asked if there were any more to look at and they said NO! They mentioned they could order anything I wanted. I had asked about a bongo. They hadn't had any in the store for over a year and weren't planning on getting any. No 1/4 inch cables in the bass room to try any out any markbass gear and all the salesmen were hanging out by the Gibson guitars. Every time I go there it is the same. The store sucks! Happy fathers day to all the fathers that were in there thinking of buying something but got no help. I had money in my pocket and I left with it. And by the way, Mingus, the car is a new vette with all the parts working. I like stingrays both to drive and play!

Mingus, you are so right! The sterling I looked at yesterday was missing the knob off the pickup selector switch and I almost cut my hand on it when I tried playing a chord on it. I wonder if GC carries insurance. I am still bummed after reading of all the other deals people got at GC on fathers day. No deals here in Denver on a couple of beat up Balls.

What suprises me is that the ones (as described above) are still selling for full price with no discounts:eek:

GC trouble?

Thank you for speaking up. I am a store manager of a Guitar Center in Denver and based off of what I was reading I believe that it's my store that you may have been in. We are located at 1585 s. Colorado Blvd. If it was this location that you were in, I would again like to thank you for your observation and comments. It gives me a chance to correct the areas of concern regarding our price, service and selection. I too am a bass player for over 20 years and can appreciate your concerns and observations about this location. We are currently working on improving our selection of basses herein Denver. After reading your entry, I immediately went to the bass room, pulled down the 2 Musicman basses, evaluated their condition and have re-priced them based on what I saw.
You were right, the hooks on which the basses were hanging had left scratches and small nicks all over the back of the neck. The issue regarding the staff congregating at the guitar counter has also been addressed and the training continues. I appreciate all that the local community of musicians does for Guitar Center and I certainly would not like to think that my valued customers and fellow musicians would not have a wonderful experience here.
We are working hard to make the difference and I welcome your business. Please feel free to ask for me directly.
Sincerely,

Kevin Taulman
