Duarte, you don't have to become one today, but go out and get lucky. You deserve to!

Good point. For those who are willing to indulge a sentimental story, something's on my mind today.

I named my first son after my grandfather (my mother's father). He died when I was 7. Even as a young kid, I always admired and respected him, but it was only in later years that a true awareness and gratitude developed for his being the family cornerstone that he was.

When I got my first "real" job, a rather bizarre and synchronistic coincidence occured while I was talking to my new boss - the head of the data processing division (mainframe-era equivalent of "IT department") at the company I'd gone to work for. As a kid, I'd never really had a clue what kind of work my grandfather did, so imagine how surreal it was when the following exchange occurred. My boss had observed and commented on my being left-handed. It reminded me of a saying my grandfather used to have about us lefties, so I quoted it. My grandfather was also a lefty, and used to say that "we're the only ones in our right minds". When I said that, my boss got a funny look on his face, and asked me my grandfather's name. When I told him, he suddenly got both very serious and sentimental at the same time and said, "Your grandfather was the fairest man I ever worked for". This was the guy who'd hired me into my first job in technical industry, and as it turned out, my grandfather had hired him into his first job, many years before.

Though my grandfather had passed 13 years earlier, that experience made me feel more connected to him than I ever had, and I began trying to learn as much about him as I could, both personally and professionally. On the personal side, he was a principled and strict, yet fair and loving patriarch, who provided for his wife and 7 children. As a child, that household was a stimulating environment and loving nest for me and my many cousins. On the professional side, he retired from both IBM and an aircraft company called Hayes International, where he worked on a team that developed a segment of the computer systems on board the Apollo landers.

So though it doesn't happen every year on Father's Day, today I'm thinking about my Grandpa, Benjamin H. (Jack) Dickerson.

End of sappy story. Off to GC. Happy Father's Day, guys.

Loved the story, and ditto to all the other dads out there... it is by far my favorite title that I've ever had.
