It looks like he'll be using the bar facing the neck with every kind of tuning since it sounds very different from the dsonic, so I'm guessing it will be that way on the 7 string also

Oh, that's new! Anyone know when exactly did John Petrucci start using this new set of pickups? Rhtyhm guitar's sound on "Black Clouds..." is pretty great, but frankly I think it's noting out of possibilities of the "old" set of pups. I'd love to play on the new setup, would love to find out that new shape of sound, especially on the BFR model. And most likely I'd love to play JP7 on those new pups, because as far as I can tell, I have never heard so brilliant record of seven string guitar. If it's because of the new pickups I think it will be my next choice after getting my own jp7.

take care and keep it BALL,
Mike

DD2 with the new pickups and an Ebony board...sweet! Is Ebony going to be the standard board now on the JP's? Isn't John's new #1 Ebony boarded?

All JP's that ship after June 26th will have the new pickups. :)

With my 7 string BFR having shipped yesterday, (thanks Aziah) it looks like my 6 string BFR which was ordered a month after the 7 string will be right on the border of getting the new pickups. I'm hoping it has them. I'll be ordering the new Dargie as well so I figure one way or another I'll have one guitar with them, if not two.

Edit: Didn't notice the date change from July 10th to June 26th. Guess that means the Six string will definitely have the new ones.

I couldn't find these anywhere so I just got off the phone with DiMarzio who said they do have them in stock and available even though no one is carrying them in store yet, and they gave me the name and number of a guy who they do tons of business with and I ordered them in the 7 string configurations. They said they would sell them to me direct but they would've charged me list so I figured I'd try their recommended dealer.

My JP7 BFR will be here mid next week (I missed the new pickup date by 2 days), so if the pickups and guitar both arrive around that time, I'll have them installed by late next week, or maybe a bit later. He said a few days if DiMarzio has them in stock have them (which they said they did) or a bit longer if they have to wind them. I'll have to have my luthier install them as my soldering skills are nothing short of terrible. I don't know the price yet, he's going to call me when he gets them in, and then I'll pay.

I'll try and do a comparison if anyone wants, but I always have found I have a real hard time describing sounds in a way that makes sense to everyone else.

Wow, very tempted to upgrade the pickups in my JP! Or better yet - get another JP with the upgraded pups! White Pearl has been a dream JP of mine for a while... if only black hardware was an option........ can you imagine?!!!

Get a White Pearl and a Stealth, switch the hardware, sell the de-stealthed stealth on the Bay...

I don't get it...

are people wanting to change the pickups because they already know they want that sound, and know they don't want the D Sonic sound? Is it JUST because JP switched? I mean.. .buying a top grade guitar and a new pickup without even considering that the pickup in it might be great seems odd to me... I mean... Me, I know that I want a regular Steve's Special and Air Norton in a regular JP6... I also know that I want to experiment with different pickups in the BFR (Because I now have one and know some sounds I'd like to see if I could get), but I know that I want my BFR like it is too... (in short I want more of them LOL)

But, I wouldn't buy a top grade guitar with the intent to change pickups that are, for the most part, equal trade outs. In quality that is... I've read several comments about the new pickups being an upgrade. They're not. They are a replacement of equal value and quality.

Something else that strikes me...

The new pickups may sound great in the BFR... which JP has been using and probably wanted them voiced for, but not like you'd want in the regular JP6. Now, I'm sure MM wouldn't put them in if it was crap... but it may not be what people expect if they are basing wanting the new pickups off of recent live clips.

I just get this thing in my head when I read this thread of... "Ooooh... I want the new pickup... I don't know if I'll like it, but I have to have it because... I don't know why." LOL I mean, I think it will be more than fine for anyone who buys a new JP... but I don't think it's wise to change pickups in a Dsonic JP just because they've changed the production run. If they did it because of a flaw that would be one thing, but the Dsonic is part of the JP history too, and having the Dsonic JP6 still carries a strong degree of uniqueness to it and I'd hope people do some aural research to know just why they want to change pickups.

I'm a huge JP fan and I LOVE his tone, but there isn't a pickup combination he's used yet that I don't love, so I'd want to make sure any new pickup will work with my gear, because even though I have a boogie, I don't have the boogies JP uses so it could make a difference.
