Clip w/ My EBMM Petrucci and Mesa Mark V

Hi everyone. I thought I would quickly post a clip I put together with my EBMM Petrucci (original first run pickups) and my 2 week old Mesa Boogie Mark V. One of the big gripes with the Mark IV was RHY2. Personally, I didn't mind it but definitely could have been better. Several requests were sent to me to put together a clip of Channel 2 on the Mark V. I recorded this entire clip on Crunch mode. The rhythms were just the amp straight up. I used a clean boost for the leads to add some sustain but it probably didn't even need it.

I did a cover of Carry On My Wayward Son by Kansas. I modernized it a little bit and played the leads from memory. You can tell I winged it in a couple of areas. Either way, I like the mode quite a bit and you can tell there is a ton of gain without having to goose it with a boost. One of my favorite lead tones I have been able to get from any Mark series amp. As always, the guitar plays like butter!!

Sounds good. I have a Mark IV and struggle with R2 as well. That Mark V is just an amazing piece of gear.

Thanks guys! I had a Mark IV which I loved but struggled with RHY2. I actually liked it but always missed something for me. If you get a chance, try a V out. The EBMM guitar will not be going anywhere!!

There a a lot of players who happily post vids and recordings who clearly can't play and have no control or tone... just like those idiots who take part in TV talent shows, they have no true self image !

It was a very nice vintage tone, quite close to the original Kansas tone in the song, not the kind of tone a Mesa has in my head. When I think of Mesa I think either alternative modern rock or heavier stuff. I know there's much more than that now with the Lone Star, the Stiletto, etc etc, but a Mark doing Kansas is new to me!

By the way, how do you get such good quality recordings? I know an SM57 is a start (when isn't it?), but how do you go about recording things after that? It always sounds like you have a studio set-up to me, but I'm positive that I must be wrong about that.

You figured out my "5413". I use it at HCAF, Rig-Talk and Petrucci Forum. I would say I'm pretty laid back and try not to get involved in the "games" that exist in other forums.

Here is my recording chain:
EBMM Petrucci -> Mesa Mark V -> Bogner OS 2x12 -> Sennheiser e609/Shure 57 -> M-Audio Mobile Pre USB -> n-Track 6 (DAW). It is a very simple chain. Mic placement can make a big difference in the quality of the tracks.

Here are the amp settings:
Crunch mode
90w
Knob settings (o'clock)
Gain: 4
Presence: 9
Treble: 3
Mids: 10
Bass: 8:30
Master Volume: 9
Preset Knob: 1 (EQ sliders off)
Output 2

It is set to Tube on the back. I know it says that Diode is only available to 45w mode but I thought I could hear a slight difference in tone. I'll have to try it next time. Maybe I'm just losing it. Either way, play with the gain knob. There is a ton of versatility with this setting.

Congrats on the new MarkV amp.We still havent got them over here in europe yet as im itching to try one out.
Can this amp cover a lot of different bases as im looking to buy a versatile amp that can cover alot of different sounds.
