Guys,

Many of you may have read my lackadaisical review of my first experience with my new Big Al. Well I’m here to admit that the fist trip out was no fun but the 2nd and 3rd were way more enjoyable!

First review:
http://www.ernieball.com/forums/music-man-basses/38587-tpb-spread-finally.html

As I washed of the funk of the past day before my gig Friday night I pondered which instruments to bring to the gig. At first I told myself that the Big Al was not coming due to our first rendezvous. For some reason though I couldn’t give up on it and in less than an hour “Gunner” and my new (un-named) Big Al were packed and ready to rock!

During set up the “noise makers” (Guitar Players) were having their pre-game drinks so the stage was quiet and I could hear what the Big AL and my rig where doing together. I noticed that the top end and mid that I was lacking at the first gig was somewhat there but was just unable to cut though as loud as the big bottom end. (This makes sense since I loved the sound of the bass by itself.) So I figured I’d try and adjust the pickup height to my liking and bring the mid and highs in the D and G string out. This could have been a disaster T-minus 1 hour from starting time.

This whole time I thought that the bass was lacking midrange and high end cut but I now I believe what was really bothering me was that I couldn’t hear the D and G string as predominantly as I would have liked. Not being able to hear those two strings just kills me during a gig, I end up cranking my rig and blasting out the front row and then I have to hear it from the sound guy.

After a small adjustment to the treble side of the middle and bridge pickup the bass came alive! I could hear what I was missing all along! Snap in my runs up the D and G string and an overall liveliness that just didn’t seem to be there before.

The bass made it though both gigs this weekend and my Bongo didn’t leave its case. (Sorry Bongoloids) I’m not saying that I’m giving up on the Music Man Humbucker, I’m just saying I found what works for me in the Big Al and I am very happy about it!

This bass is very cool and with this small adjustment making a huge difference for me I now believe that it can work for everyone! Death Metal to Country Basses should try a Big AL! (BB’s stamp of approval!)

Great now Brandt has everybody adjusting their basses. Brandt if tou are used to humbuckings there is an adjustment with the big al

I think you whispered this in my ear before… What are you saying exactly BP? …you are of course welcome to PM me if it is a secret. I won’t tell, promise!

BP, sorry for tweaking the pickups.. the factory height just didn’t work for the music I was playing. I in no way recommend that everyone go out and tweak there pickup height.

No need to apologize. I have to adjust almost every bass I get a minimal amount to make it work best for me.
