Recently i tried a MM and what can I say :D I wasn´t into them ´till now (i´m asking myself why) and as a begginer i have a question.you all probably know this.Whats the difference between, for an example, Stingray that was built in 1999 and a Stingray that was built in 2008?I mean, are they built from same type of wood, the same pickups, same electronics? I cannot find on internet anything that says "this stingray that was built in 2008 has this...technical improvements compared to stingray from 2006, 2004,etc. I know that this may sound stupid but can you give me the answer anyway :)

Thanks

I´ve read that, but those are only technical and optical explanations. What i specificly want to know is are there any improvements or reggresion soundwise between these models. If i wanted to buy a stingray that was built in 1999 should i expect less, then from stingray built in 2008, for an example.

Hello there and welcome to EBMM forum, you might read a lot of opinion here, there and everywhere, some you will find useful and of interest, some other you might consider more of a myth than actual reality.

There is however a larger majority of people, including myself who are firm believers that Ernie Ball has resurrected the Music Man product, and not just taken it over as a financial investment, and what that means to us the end users, is that todays products from Ernie Ball have never been so good, and that the quality of the basses is so much better than they used to be, they are still built with select woods, and their manufacture has been inproved from many factors, the neck joints with 5 or 6 screws joints (depending on the model) are the tightest in the world, the components used for the pre-amps are A class, the tuners etc etc. Older Music Man can only be attractive to some because of the age mojo, and the acquired vintage status, but some of them which you find today are no better in comparison to the quality a recent Ernie Ball Stingray.

If you have the chance to try both side by side, you will see what I mean. There have been different timbers used in the Stingray bodies, such as ash and alder, ash is what is used for the bodies nowadays and I doubt if you would be able to tell the difference between the two. Pickups have gone from alnico magnets to ceramic and back to alnico for the Stingray whereas Sterling use ceramic, and Bongo's use neodymium. All these factors are subject to personal preference and you just have to find the medium that suits you and your playing style. Good luck

There are no real differences between a 99 Stingray and a 2008 model as long as we are comparing like instruments.

Now, as opposed to then, you can add extra pickups and some finishes are different. You can also order a Stingray with a Sterling-sized neck profile, but if we're comparing standard Stingrays, they are virtually identical.

I believe in 1999 you could only get a Stingray with a single humbucker. You can now order them with a single humbucker, 2 humbuckers, or a humbucker and single coil. The only other difference is that all Music Man guitars now come with a compensated nut which improves intonation slightly. I'm not sure if they come on the basses though, but I'm pretty sure they do. Other than that the models are basically the same.

Yes, the basses come with the compensated nut since '05.

Right, if he was taking two single pickup StingRays, one from '99 and one from '08, the only thing different would be the compensated nut.
