I have a '94 Stingray 4, natural Ash with Bird's Eye neck, maple board with Flea bridge. Bought it brand new, my first REAL bass.

Been longing for an SR5, and an opportunity has come up for a straight up trade for a 2003 sunburst/rosewood single H.

Would you do it, or hang on to an old favorite?

If you have to ask...then I would venture to say you don't want to do the trade.

I thought along the same lines...

I think I wouldn't.
Not because I don't like the SR5. But I wouldn't let the 4 string go.

A straightforward 4sting is something like bread and butter. You should always have it around.
This simplicity has something to it. Something that draws me always back to it once in a while... And there are always gigs for it.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't get a SR5 anyway... ;)

I wouldn't trade. I would drink a lot of beer and understand that my wish for the SR5 had yet to come true.

The SR5's are sold at many places. Save up have them both.

imho

I'd hang on to what you have but start saving for a 5er. The birdseye maple neck is a real keeper.

New and used prices in the USA are incredibly good value. Worth a little wait.

Somehow, I've never quite been able to let any bass go that I've bought

So, no, don't trade, save and get a 5er later

I see all of your points. And yes, the SR4 does hold quite a bit of sentimentality. I think I would cry if I t does go.

But after PM-ing the other guy, he seems a bit bummed about a few of the scratches the finish of my 4 has. It's a 15 year old bass, it's bound to get a bit scratched.

Oh well...looks like it isn't meant to leave me. If it doesn't go nw, it won't go ever and I suppose I'll make sure of that.

Perhaps if I get to sell my '80 Camaro, I'll buy the Stealth Black-on-Black-on-Black Sterling 5 HH I fell in love with most recently.

I would keep the sr4 for sure. It's an awesome bass, but more important, it has been yours for over 15 years man. You're gonna regret the trade. Save yourself some money for a second EBMM!

I would keep it. Those birdseye necks are a thing of the past now on basses. I agree with the others, keep it and save for the 5er that you really want.

...if anyone was curious...

As it turns out, the other guy decided that I shouldn't trade, since my 4 holds a special light with me. He took another offer.
So I still got it, and as I said, I'll keep it for another 15 years at least.
