A friend and I made some clips tonight to compare the old and new pickups. I have the new pickups in my standard JP6 (Crunch Lab/LiquiFire) and he has the original pickups (custom wound Steve's Special/Air Norton) in his standard JP6.

We used my Mesa/Boogie DC-3 through a Mesa 3/4 back 1x12 mic'd in another room with a Pearl CM-2000 mic placed on axis, just inside the edge of the cone, touching grill cloth, with blankets over the cab. No amp setting changes were made. My friend did the playing and I did the recording/micing/editing. All I did was normalize the clips - no EQing.

For streaming only clips go here:

To better hear the differences between these pickups download the raw .wav files (in a .zip file) here:

Good job with the sound clips.

Did you end up putting an F-Spaced pickup in both positions or only in the bridge? I know DiMarzio says on guitars with a nut of 1 11/16 you can use an F-Spaced pickup in neck position as well, but it's only really needed in the bridge.

I need to grab a set from DuBaldo's for my JP6 Rosewood. The 7 string pickups are only made F-spaced so I didn't have to give it any thought when I purchased those.

F-spaced for the Crunch Lab, and standard for the LiquiFire...

Thanks for listening!

Nice! What I head here is that the new pups are more focused on the mids, while the older ones are more spread with more boomy bass. The mids on the bridge pup bring out more crunch and cut, while the neck pup sings much more, it has more of a PAF quality to it IMO. I like the new ones better, specially the neck pup.

Since you were able to hear all that from the clips I'd say we did a good job! I agree completely with your observations. The differences were even more pronounced when sitting in the room. I think the .mp3 conversion and uploading to soundclick diminished the differences noticeably. I'll see if I can use the raw .wav files and upload them instead of the .mp3 files I saved.

I've edited my original post and added a link to download the raw .wav files in a zip file format. These clips are uncompressed and untouched! You can really hear the differences MUCH better with these clips. I did not realize how much the clips had changed when I converted them to .mp3 and uploaded them to SoundClick until I went back and listened to the raw .wav files after listening to the uploaded versions. The raw files sound MUCH better because they are not compressed or touched in any way!

For the lazy... :) ... here's the link to the zip file with the .wav file clips:

Just downloaded the zip and will give them a listen tonight.

Thanks so much for doing this man, you're my hero.

Cool, let me know what you think. I wouldn't have gone through all this trouble if I didn't think they sounded AWESOME. And, several people have asked how they sound in comparison so I thought it would be a nice, informative thread for people on the fence about swapping pickups...
