Just a question about nut wear as i would like to try alot of diffrent tunings and string gauges but would be scared about ruining the nut. anyone done this and found it to be a bad idear? i mean its only plastic isnt it? and the big string gauges would gouge it out.

If you use 9 or 10 gauges, you don't need to widen the slots of the nut. But if you want to use heavier strings, you will need to enlarge the slots with a file otherwise you risk to crack the nut. If you enlarge the slots too much, it can be a problem if you want to go back to lighter strings.

it's only a nut, a good repairer will be able to file or replace one if necessary. I've even seen low nuts built up with super glue
