Hey, u talkin to me? NY
This has to be the most exciting thread that I have read so far (not including BP's threads of course). I can't wait to find out about the history of your awesome JP7! Very cool stuff...

Dudley had a chance to look at the pictures and he confirmed that it is a prototype. He said he remembers the modification to the piezo plate. Mystery solved!

Woohoooo!!! :) :) :)

Thanks AJ, that's very good news! Dudley's the man! :)

But, does that mean, this is by any chance even one of John's prototypes??

Because we have no record of the guitar beyond Dudley's memory of the piezo module it is impossible to say who it belonged to when it initially left the factory. Neat guitar though!

Cool!

Now it looks like you have to be a detective and try to trace the guitar back through it's previous owners.

Sadly, no one at EBMM chimed in to this thread. The piezo pre-amp box on his Pet has slightly different dimensions than the production box. It cuts into the body more. The battery box is def. lower. All these different routs point to a pre-production, quasi-proto body. The build codes on the body do not match up with the shield inlay neck. Maybe Felix should change the title of his thread to catch the eye of some one at EBMM, something like:
"Do I have Prototype."

I thought the Prototypes had more Gibson style knobs.

(...) This is all very exciting, I'm glad this worked out n your benefit :D

Wow that is awesome! Congrats on the prototype!!

That right there is some great news!

Thanks, thanks, thanks! :)

Cool!

In deed Sir. ;) I already know where the previous owner bought it, but that was some years ago, I don't know if that other guy even remembers he had this one (it's a shop, actually)... I'll try my best!

I thought the Prototypes had more Gibson style knobs.

I've never seen G*bson style knobs on a EBMM, but I haven't seen that much prototypes yet ;) Well, at least Ernie's prototype has some black F*nder style knobs. And if I remember correctly, the black sparkle JP6 and the red JP7 that John played on the "Scenes from NY" DVD has the same knobs as Ernie's.

Guys, I'm veeeeery excited about this!! :) :) :)

I have to say, I never knew that there is a forum like this, where even the employees answer every stupid question that they're asked, that so cool! I'll stay a while, that's for sure! ;)

Thanks to everyone who contributed! You guys rock!

Greetings from Germany!

Hey Guys

I've got an update: This guitar was one of the first JP's that we showed at the NAMM show back in 2001. It falls somewhere between a prototype and a normal production guitar that would have been delivered later that Spring. Tomas, one of our schedulers, took at look at the pictures and noticed a few things. First of all, a prototype would not have a build code yet. Second, when we are sending instruments through production for the NAMM show they are marked with blue on the work order sticker. He said he's not sure why there is no record of the work order number or serial number, but that's what is going on. Often times when we show things at the NAMM show they are slightly different than what ends up being shipped out when normal production starts (we may still have to iron out some details such as where to source parts, etc). That would explain the inconsistencies with the preamp box, battery box and tremolo. With that said, it is still a very cool guitar as it is one of the first JP's that the world got to see!

Yeah, the plot thickens now :)

Cool, so I have a NAMM showcase guitar! And this was one of the first JP models presented to the public, that's really a small piece of EBMM history in my opinion. :)

Well, you can call it "late prototype" or "pre-production model", it doesn't matter to me really. It is something special, there's no doubt about that.

Thanks AJ!

Hey Slav,

there was absolutely no case candy. The case looks like a standard Music Man case, it's the black hardshell flight case everyone knows.

Well said. I think we all kinda figured that out anyway (with MUCH less detail of course) because we knew it was very similar to the current JPs, but was after the blackfire prototype. Like AJ said, it's still an awesome find and a piece of history, even if it isn't a prototype in the strictest sense (still good enough for me to call it one though ;) )

Hey Matt,

that's exactly what I am thinking, too.

I think I'll refer to it as a late proto ;)

Greetings!
Felix
