Not an answer to the question I know , but this months Guitar Buyer magazine (UK) has a glowing review on the Sterling AX20 and JP50 as well as a couple of basses. 5/5 stars with nothing negative to say at the price.

i would love a sterling AX20 with maple fretboard and a tremolo...
