John is so great player, but his needs are very different from most people. He needs to twang and do the hi gain thing. I'd prefer to have a seperate guitar with singles and one with humbuckers. EBMM have the Albert Lee model if your looking for twang.

About a year ago I had to "duel with the Devil" at the Birmingham Music Live exhibition. The guitar I "had" to use was a Sub 1 and I have to say it played great (unlike me!!) Get it especially if the price is right.

I wouldn't compare the John 5 Squier to the SUB at all. The Fender perhaps, but the SUB would still walk on it.

The Sub is a great guitar. Like many other EBMMs, I just keep getting sidetracked and buy another EBMM instead, because they just keep putting out new stuff.

I've been planning to get a Gold Roller, a Y2D, a Luke, an ASS, and a Sub, but I keep getting other guitars instead.

Congrats....you won't regret the purchase :)

I got a black one a while ago for a decent price and it outrules the alternatives of whatever brand (I must know, as I played them all ;) ).

The SUB is a workhorse, non-bu**sh*t, non-overload guitar, and as some brothers here have clearly stated, standard config (PUPs etc.) is extremely workable. And if you want more you just put in whatever you want it to be. I might exchange the PU in while, just to pull out the little extra...but that's definitely up to personal preference. The stock PU is good.

Have fun, mate

The Silhouette Special pickguard can be mounted on the Sub 1, and a fair few chaps here have changed their pickguard with a HSS config.

Now, to keep that config you would have to route the body for the middle pickup.

Alternatively have one made in the material of your choice. In the past, Customer Service had mentioned Pickguard Heaven to me, as they have pickguard templates for EBMM guitars.

Being a UK resident, I opted to have a local luthier produce mine using the original Sub 'guard as a template. I've had three made over the last year or two, and they are great, I change to suit my mood.

For my last one, above, I had my Sub body routed for the SM-Y2D layout, and added an Abalone 'guard; was well worth the effort, it really is quite a flexible config.

Hope that helps.
