I'm doing my first audition next Monday, I'm so excited, it's very rare that I find a band that I actually like around here most of it is southern rock. To top it off I'm using my brand new aguilar db212 aguilar db750 and my never giged with h/s sterling bass. I got the songs down there very simple it's actually a female singer. If you want to check the band out website is
The Lucks on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads sure it's not hard rock but I can definatly enjoy playing this stuff!! Wish me luck!!

No need to apologize for not playing hard rock...I love playing bass so much that I'll play pretty much anything. Heck, in my little band (also with a female lead singer) we are covering the P!nk song "F-off and leave me alone, I am lonely" or whatever its called . Never in a miilion years did I ever think I would do a song like that. And I also never thought I would enjoy it...

Play how your comfortable, regardless of their pick/fingers preference...
Bust it out. Good luck!

Put your head down, enjoy it, dig in with that pick, take a smidge of treble off, and Rock on! Good luck mate.

I used to worry about the finger vs pick thing...not so much anymore...while the attack of the pick is audible, after the first few millisecs the tone is essentially the same. Anyhow, we fret and worry about all these things as bass players. But rarely does someone in the audience come up and say "Hey, I am really glad you used a pick, otherwise I would hate your band".:(

More important things are showing up on time for rehearsals, being prepared with your material, locking in tight with the drummer, and not stealing the lead guitarist's girlfriend/wife.

Sounds like a little "No Doubt" influence of music to me. Just go there and do your thing,
if you can gel with the drummer "your golden". Pick or no pick depends on the song and the sound you want to achive, sometime when i don't use a pick i will just finger style close to the bridge to give that edge.
Just don't overpower the guitarist, try to relax and groove to the music, and you'll be fine.
Good luck!

Well it's pushed back to thursday, I personally feel picks are needed for some songs but not others, these songs I just do not feel would mesh well with a pick so I might just go at it pickless.

I'm just worried because they seem picky. (no pun intended) there looking for someone who can drive the song and knows when to play fills but knows when to play 1/4 or 1/8th notes..

To me it's like saying I want you to play exactly what I want without telling you, which can be hard to do..

Don't compromise yourself, do your best your own way and get into it. That is where the all the mojo comes from. If there is some kind of insistence about picking all the time you are likely heading down a road (ego, power, etc,) that is going nowhere anyway. If you can't be U, U ain't gonna be happy ;)

Every band says that. Just go and play and don't stress.

Don't sweat it. A lot of times things that are said over the phone have not bearing on what happens in person. Just give it your best. They may seem to have a specific criteria but many times people will open up once they see what other options there are.
