I have a question....

What is the general opinion on direct boxes?
I am more interested in improving my live sound, so will using one (any of the Sansamp models or the MXR M-80) do the trick?

Most actual amps have a really good d.i. out with pre / post-EQ switch, so as long as you have an Amp on stage with you there will be no need to.

If you want to tweak the sound there are a lot of possibilities by a variety of manufacturers. What Sound do you want to have?

+1...never leave home without it.

Same here. Jensen transformers. Love Radial JDI´s. At least for active basses. I can prefer active line boxes for passive basses tho. If someone bring a passive bass to the studio I run, I most often hook up a Avalon U5. But I always use a Radial JDI with my own Musicman basses. Wonderful indeed.

Sorry for asking a stupid question, but what does a direct box like the radial JDI do for your sound?

What do you folks think of the Tech 21 SansAmp bass driver as an active DI? I got one 'cuase that is what our church uses. The tone dial-ins are nice, but how is it as a DI? I've noticed that none of our bass players can be heard very distinctly in the house mix. Poor DI maybe? Can't be a lack of player talent, can it???

I used a Sansamp RBI before when playing live. I heard it through my wireless setup while teh audience heard it through the PA. But the rest of the band was complaining they never heard enough bass on stage. Anyhow, when I recently changed my amps form the heavy stuff to a Markbass, I sold the Sansamp as the Markbass has a good DI out that has its own level control...

Because of this reason and the need for some more cash, I sold the Sansamp.

Long story short:
1. The Sansamp was quite handy tool. Lots of tone shaping capabilities.
2. I have heard people say good things about the Radial products as well. Some say its way better than Sansamp
3. I tried an MXR M80 but much preferred the Sansamp and Radial Tonebone.
4. The sound guy is probably not mixing enough bass via the church PA.
5. Its nice to still have a bass amp on stage so you and the rest of the band can hear the bass. Direct boxes migh not give you that. Newer Markbass stuff has a seprate level control for the XLR out which is quite handy.

I've used it, but with an active bass it's bordering on overkill unless you use its overdrive capability...or if you don't have an on-stage amp.

If your bass players can't be heard, it's probably not the fault of the SansAmp.

Reading this thread a couple days ago made me curious about my SansAmp. I decided I was going to use it at praise band rehearsal last night. We're not allowed to use amps so I usually use my Line6 Bass POD or just go direct through a church provided passive Rapco DI.

The difference got noticed by fellow band members and the sound man. All thumbs up. The tone was thicker, more natural sounding than the POD and not at all muddy. Makes me wonder why I haven't been using it all along.

So can you guys tell me the answer to this? For an active bass is a passive or active DI a better choice? I've always sort of thought active bass, passive DI. Passive bass active DI. Is this theory wrong?

I kinda wish I didn't sell my Sansamp last week. I am starting to miss it...:(

I made that same mistake several years back. Started regretting it after only a week or two. Once they came out with the three channel model I bought one and vowed to never repeat my error.
