Hi,

the question is: "are the three-way electronics on the Ray and the Sterling voiced in a different way?"

It seems to me that the eq centers are different and I prefer the Sterling but maybe it's just a different interaction between the electronics and the instrument itself.

Comments welcome...

The Sterling preamp is different. Not sure on the specifics, but I believe that the Sterling preamp is voiced differently due to the fact that the Sterling has ceramic pickups and the Stingray has alnico pickups.

I have to agree that the Sterling sounds to me like the preamp set points for mids and treble are set higher than the SR.
And yeah Ceramic VS Alinco's they each have their own voice.IMO the Ceramic's have a little more edge and bite to them where the Alinco's have a taimer warmer tone.

+1 to the above.

Aside from the electronics and pickup, it will also be hard to find two instruments that sound alike. Even two of the same model will have different wood characteristics.

The eq curve sounds different to me on my two basses. The SR4 eq is a little less obvious then the SR5 eq. I love them both and usually play with the eq dead flat but I honestly can't get a bad tone out of wither bass no matter how I set them up.

As an aside, the Sterling/SR5 single H deserves a lot more credit for its versatility. The series/parallel switch along with the eq allow for a lot of different tones.

Exactly...You can have 2 basses made from the same tree, made by the same person, on the same day, and they will each have their own tone.
