That was great. Would like to know if you ever use the mutes? I have a trans bridge on my fretless with the capabilty of fitting them but wonder if it of any real use on a fretless. Also interested in your string choice. My Ray is still wearing the same tapewounds it came with. I've got 'mwah' but I desire some of that fretless 'zing'

In other posts, he said that he uses DR strings on all his basses.

Pertyman, your demos are great - excellent playing.
I've had a 93 fretless 3 band Ray for about 6 months - I use it mostly in a 50's style rock and roll band I play in but I do also goof around with Jaco stuff and occassionally take it to jam sessions for a laugh - it can really nail the recorded Jaco sound well. I took the rounds off it because they were literally eating the neck - I now have pressure wounds on it (Roto 55 Solo Bass) which are kinder on the neck but give the mwah and some zing.
I have started using the mutes just for the E and A strings, and the bass gives that thump with little sustain on them - but the D and G are then used without mutes for sustained mwah type stuff. I find I rarely need the mwah on the E and A but also rarely need the thump on D and G so it's a good compromise, especially on slower songs. Those old bridges really give an added dimension to the bass.
Sorry, I'm not computer literate enough to record it and post it. I find it works well for the stuff I do.

Nice! I have a 93' Fretless Sterling w/mutes (I never use). No switch or lined fingerboard though.

You're getting a really great sound out of that, and awesome playing! It makes me very sad that I sold my fretless Ray. I agree, rounds sound insanely good with fretless. Nice.
