hello and welcome to the forum and to the 25th ownership, which configuration do you have? pickup(s) fingerboard?
I can't speculate because mine is still to arrive, but if you tell us which 25th you have surely someone will come along and give you some pointers.

To "growl"? What?
Thanx for the warm welcome! I have the HH setup...love those growly tones I hear on musicmans, but I have no idea how to achieve that w/ my setup...any pointers would be most appreciated.

maybe you would have been better off with a simpler model. Anyway, a tone that usually works for me on similar basses is active, bridge pickup, boost the treble a fair bit, boost the mids a little, roll the bass off a tiny bit. I find that to be a good metal sound.

Congrats on your 25th spy-d. I've got a 25th HH coming, so I can't supply any first-hand, direct advice. However, I have a Bongo HH with similar electronics and I have developed a serious growl that I wanted to share with you.
Minimize the treble and high-mid.
Put the low-mid about detent +25%.
On the Bongo, the blend is about +25% toward the neck pickup, so on the 25th, I would try selecting both pickups or the inside coils in series.
Increase the bass EQ as much as you can at the volume you want to play without excessive distortion.
My amp is all flat except I roll off the treble all the way.
It's kind of a burpy, thick growl; I like it. Hope you find what you're looking for.

I can't help thinking a 25th would be a bit overwhelming/overkill for someone seemingly new to active basses?

On my 25th HH 4 string, theres no setting that does not produce some sort of growl. So maybe we are talking about something different. If you're really into lots of thick midrange, then: active mode, bridge H in series mode. Add mids to your liking. It may help to roll off the bass a bit, to highlight the mids more.

what is commonly know as growl is normally achieved by adding some mids to most basses,i thought people where just saying hello to the new guy and trying to be helpful.

Well, I just used Google Interpreter to translate this word "growl" in my language, ...and start laughing, sorry!
In my language that means the sound that produces some animal, beast, before barking, or before attack, a warning sound, deep bass with middle bass spiced with some high "sparks" blend, like old fashioned V8 engine when idle!
Is that's what You want?
If it is, try the next setup:
First of all I must warn You that I never tied 25th yet, but I'll speak in theory if helps!
Switch just bridge H pickup in serial mode, cut some high-midds, boost bass, boost low-midds, try treble flat, than if need clarity, boost a little treble too!
Just theory, everything depends of the rest of Your amplification and PA support if exist!
