please try this sound and tell me if it works for you, I was tinkering around with my Bongo HH and the amp and I came across these particular settings which gave a very close rendition to a P-Bass sound, try it with a pick too, let me know what you think.

p.s.: the piezo was not in use for these settings.
p.p.s.: the strings are EB #2836 Regular Slinky, broken in, not dead but not zingy fresh either. 60% new

That did it.

I've fielded the ol', "How can I make my insert premium bass here sound like a Precision?" question so many times... I've oft times threatened (to myself) to put together a canned response.

Now I think I'll actually do it.

Ken...

Come on guys, no need to make fun, we always try to emulate one sound or another with our instruments, and I have thought it might be of interest to others, last summer I managed to get very close Jaco type sound with the same bass and amp, and I know it's not the same, but it's nice to know you can just about get any sounds out of this wonderful bass.

If you are not keen to try new things then... it's your call.

Thanks Grand Wazoo

I appreciate this kind of information. I wish more people would share specifics of what works for them. I for one (still) find the Bongo eq controls daunting.

Thanks

Come on guys, no need to make fun,

um, I'm not.

we always try to emulate one sound or another with our instruments,

I don't. I want my sound, whatever sound may be floating around in my head. One of them is a fretless with rounds and a rubber pick. i love it.

and I have thought it might be of interest to others,

and it is.

last summer I managed to get very close Jaco type sound with the same bass and amp, and I know it's not the same,

I don't want to be Jaco. I want to be me.

but it's nice to know you can just about get any sounds out of this wonderful bass.

I think it is wonderful that we can get a bunch of different sounds.

If you are not keen to try new things then... it's your call.

I'm all for trying new things but if I want a p-bass sound, I'll get a p-bass.

I thought this was cool, nice the way he had charts for both eq's..
when I first bought my LMII,(and also my SVT-CL)I used to photocopy charts of the amp's eq,and bass's eq,and I'd come up with presets for my band,

I used to share a space with other bands, and other players would tinker with my amp's controls while I was gone,so I always had little cheat-sheets to get the settings perfect, quickly.I'd label them,"basic sound", "Jamerson sound" etc
I love obsessive, wierd stuff like this..
I'd love to try this, but I'll probably forget to do it. My Bongo is getting set up right now at my tech's..

I like how you keep the EQ flat and get a sound by using Markbass's tone filters(if that's what you call 'em).

I need to use them more...especially since I usually use the EQ on my basses for tonal variety.

i will try it later,i play mostly covers and i do like to get close to the sound on the record on some songs, others i just love to blast out my sr5. but i dont want to carry my p bass, jazz, bongo, stingray etc to every gig.in fact it been about 2 years since i giged with a fender.
i was doing a swing set at the weekend and i love the tone of the sr5 with just a touch of treb and bass boost and hand position right on the neck.

anyway we change songs too quick to dial in a tone like this and i would prob never set it like this for a whole gig,but its nice to know you can

I think all information is good. I think that any eq needs to be tweaked for the room condition etc....also the sound is a lot abou tthe mark basses filters......I use almost no eq on the mark basses and the two filters....

BTW I got a new single 12 combo from marco on friday and it rocks1

Uprightish:

1. Insert self in formerly purple room now painted a soothing sand color.

2. Plug Flaming Biff Bongo (4HH) into LMII set flat.

3. Talk other members of band into playing "Blue Christmas".

4. Roll blend knob all the way to neck H. Turn treble off on bass.

5. Argue about Jordanairre background vocals.

6. Palm mute all strings and pluck near end of fretboard. Allow no note to ring, period.

7. Watch 2/3 of cowpilot gasp in amazement.

8. Repeat then eat pasta.

The MAJOR reason that I held out for a used single H bongo. All those stacked knobs, too much fiddle room. I like the sound I get with everything flat on the bongo, flat on the CMD-121p and then mess with the filters.

Heck, I'd love a bongo with one knob. Volume.

Do you have to follow that exact order or can you start with #8? :D
