Yup I put Stewmac 149 wire in a few of my Axis guitars. Its very similar to Dunlop 6100, and its a big improvement. I prefer bigger fretwire, and for me bending is easier and I just prefer the feel!

Jonny, i cant say i have played them on a mm...i have played them on other guitars that they didnt come stock and the results were mixed...part of the attraction with mm is feeling the a1 woods they use in their necks...i think a guy named eddie said that!

I prefer medium to jumbo.....all depends on the size of the neck too I guess.

I prefer scalloped necks and huge frets myself and have never had any qualms about modding an instrument to better suit my needs. I say: go for it... and make those jumbos stainless - you won't be sorry!

what's the difference between normal and stainless???

J

Nickel frets over time will dent and wear down and need to be replaced.
Stainless Steel frets allegedly are immune to this...

They supposedly kill your strings quicker though.

Does a different fret size or material affect the tone?

The idea of larger stainless frets appeals to me, but not if it changes the tone of my beloved Balls!

this has been talked about a lot on many different forums.

I refretted my Luke about 2 years ago.. I just wanted a slightly taller fret... I just find taller frets easier than low frets to play on...

the guy who did this got slightly mixed up on what I wanted and put stainless steel frets on the guitar... when I went to pick it up he told me about the SS frets, I told him I didn't ask for this... he offered to redo the guitar with what I wanted... I said I'd try them and if I didn't like them I'd get it redone...

the SS frets are still on there... I love them on my Luke... string wear is the same and I find NO difference with the tone.... unlike many who claim it makes the guitar brighter... bends are much easier and playability is IMO better...

not everyone agrees and thats fine... all I know is that this guitar is amazing and I love it very much..:)

little clip...

Just a quick question, but ye all that are keen to put jumbo frets on your balls, did you all used to be 'shredders' back in the 90's??? - Maybe own an Ibanez or 2?? -

I got a guitar redone with jumbo fretwire, but it's a painted neck, not too sure how well jumbo would work out witht the ball neck,

Just sayin;

I'm a fan of stock specs. I really am.

As much as I respect the opinion that it maximizes performance, I think the player should always accommodate the instrument.

There's just something special about playing an instrument stock. I don't know what it is. :D
