Haha,

all joking aside, I will admit that all the EBMMs that I plugged into my old Ampeg V4BH sounded great.

I agree, but always there are some "buts" according the tube bass amps!

Real tube amp working in "A" class output operation is impossible to built stronger than aprox. 25 Watts !!!

With push-pull pentode output tubes is always present distortion sound between +Ve and -Ve part of sinusoidal signal and hardly you can reach over 100 Watts without totally distortion!

Conclusion: Tube amps are great for studio recordings, and small club gigs!

The perfect bass amp will be with tube preamp section and mosfet transistor power output! (my personal opinion)

There are very good "normal" standard transistor amps on the market which works just fine in all conditions! ;)

Man, I cannot resist a good "tube vs. solid state" throw down, so here's two cents from an old dog who's hauled his share of "big iron" over the years.....

1. Q: True or false? Tube amps are great for studio recordings, and small club gigs.

A: True. Many folks have used amps such as the legendary B-15 in the studio for years with great results. And amps such as the Ampeg V-4 and V-4B, The various Fender Bassman models, and several Euro amps like the 100 watt Hiwatt and Marshalls are fabulous small to mid size club amps. But how many Ampeg SVT"S ( and the like) have been produced for human consumption since 1969? And why do most of the bass players I've seen playing them almost always play them? Year after year after year....

2 . Q. Hybrid, Class D, all tube designs sound better than......Transistor, Class A, Digital switching amps etc.

A. False. Perception is reality. Whatever makes YOU respond in a positive fashion, is the best path. I've owned just about one of everything , and I still haven't found the perfect setup...keep trying different things, it's been a great learning experience for me!

I prefer to OWN solid state simply for the lack of tube maintenance. The majority of the back-line rigs that have been provided at either Disney or when we're an opening act have been of the tube variety or at least have a tube in the pre-amp section. At different times Disney had provided Eden, Ampeg and Gallien-Krueger.
EBMMs sound good through anything and everything I've had the opportunity to use!

i have used a kustom 1200 watt head for the longest time and tried out a svt cl recently and the next day i made a down payment on it, i dont care if it takes years to pay off(the music shop i go to lets me make a minimum of 5$ every two weeks) i need that amp. its ridiculously loud for a tube amp but im worried about underpowering my 2 15 inch speakers with it. should that be a concern? i mean it was hooked up to a set of 8 10s at the store and they were rated at 800 watts rms so it should be fine right?

Well Wattage (hope I spell this right) is not so important that something sounds loud, talking about amps and speaker cabinets, both!
All depends how many SPL could produce a cabinet to the air! (Sound Pressure Level)

Now, tube power amp in it's final output section have voltage transformer which is also used for matching output impedance in Ohms!

So, in Your case it would be very important to have equal impedance of speaker cabinet, in that case amp will give what it could give of tube power, and for sure will be loud enough to play with band or for a stage!
OK, if that tube amp have some DI output, signal will be taken from pre-amp section so should be no distortion in PA support direction, I hope! ;)

Depends on what kind of 15's you have, but I doubt you are going to feel "underpowered". Don't forget that the 8X10 ( and I assume this is an Ampeg) is part of what got you excited about the amp's tone, and is just as important as the head. The Ampeg 8X10 is designed to "roll off" most of the frequencies below 40 hz, giving the impression of a smoother and mostly consistent fundamental from the low E on up. These rigs aren't hi-fi. And yes they have a component of distortion in the tone ( but not as much as some folks would have you believe...).

For me, they have the pleasant side efffect of making me smile involuntarily. And folks have always complemented me more on my tone when I play through an all tube head, so it isn't just my imagination. Again folks, YMMV!

Ill chime in.

After being a solid state user for years, I tested some all tube Ampegs, but in the end went with the Orange AD200b Mk3. FANTASTIC...and pretty to look at.

There is no solid state/hybrid amp that feels like all tube...and that is why all tube still exists.

Markbass are great, and do the quick warmth VERY well, and at a pretty good price, (especially the LM2/3). Markbass excels at the micro market...hence why I bought one as a total opposite and easier to move amp compared to the Orange.

So...I also tested a Shuttle 9.0. No thanks...that pre-tube just doesnt work for me...at all. I tried lots of different settings, followed the videos...nah....sounds nothing like I wanted it to. Ultra hifi bass guys will dig it...but not for me. It lacked warmth and massive low impact. Hybrids just dont work for me.

Im now returning the Shuttle 9.0 as its brand new back to the store for a TC Elec RH450...and their tube tone isnt tube....its their version of what a tube amp sounds like gained up in the pre and power sections...if you just have pre....it just doesnt do it for me.

IMO of course, and after serious testing.

No offence to Genz....they have great customer service, but there amps aint for me.
