Just bought a second hand vintage burst super sport with a maple neck. :D The previous owner has installed cream pickup surrounds. He said he had seen it done at a Music Man show and liked it, so had decided to do the same to make the guitar a little individual.

Has anyone else seen this done?

I doubt EBMM produced any ASS with pickup ring

the only pickup ring I know, but I may be wrong, are on the Silo 20th and 25th and they are black not cream.

the rings appear to be cosmetic as the pickups look to be still screwed into the body. ther is a difference in the tone in ring mounted vs. screwed into the body. not sure i totally understand the purpose of putting mounting rings on a guitar and not attach the pickups to them. unles if they are hiding some kind of damage.

That is a nice quilt. What color is that? The rings don't look bad at all but it'll likely hurt the resale value of the guitar. It's too bad the previous owner couldn't find a way to make that a reversible mod.

The colour is vintage sunburst I believe.

I agree it's a shame it's not easily removable, got an excellent price tho.

It's not hiding damage purely cosmetic.

Thanks for all the comments.

Just my 2 cents, but those mounting rings ruined the cool EBMM look. i would remove them.

I'm pretty sure Machinehead in the UK had a used Axis Super Sport with surrounds added - looked awful IMHO. There's something about the simplicity / cleanliness of having direct mounted pups...

Ordinarily I wouldn't say this, but on that particular ASS, the pickup rings look pretty good. Must be the combination of the type of bridge, and the color, combined with the 5-way selector tip and trem arm tip. In order maintian continuity of appearence, I would replace your volume and tone knobs with traditional, creme colored strat-style knobs.

agreed, removing the rings is an unfortunate fix as it'll leave eight holes holes in the top. Suggest putting some screws in the empty pup screw-holes. At least it might help make the rings look more useful/necessary.
