the greatest...and not just as a musician.

Just had to post about how great a time we had at the smb show. the music was as youd expect. uplifting and amazing.

but we also crashed the soundcheck. me, a friend from hs, and both dubaldos, and colin. They went through ice cakes, cruise missle, little kids, baroken dreams, and a couple others.

I also got a chance to say hi to janine (steves wife) who by the way is always so nice and friendly and was getting all the merch ready. Gave janine a photo i took of steve and sterling last summer both playing lapsteel style at the gc 25th tour they did. I had already sent a copy to sterling and it was such a classic shot i wanted steve to have it as well. Janine looked at it and said shes never seen steve play the guitar that way. neither had i which was why i took it.

during that gc tour on the san diego stop...which was luke morse sterling and john ferarro...morse actually stayed after everyone else had left and picked up a guitar and answered a few question and played his new classical song for about 7 of us who were still hanging around...including forum peeps norm, capt don, bravo victor, and me. My gf snapped a classic picture of that moment.

Anywho...i took that picture to a t-shirt place and had 4 t's made up. for me, bravo victor, his wife, and one for steve. I also had it captioned FREE GUITAR LESSONS! Gave the tshirt to janine at soundcheck.

Then me, bob, and bobs wife wore the shirts to the show.

Short story long, Steve comes out for the meet and greet wearing the shirt too. We continue to be amazed at the warmth of this guy. just a fantastic night all around. so even though he doesn't hang around these forums, i just wanted to thank him and janine for another fantastic night of music and happiness

Well, that's what makes him the one and only. I had a very small talk with him after the workshop in Cologne during the signing of my Morse, and he, while being slightly uneasy that there are still so many people and he has to go on stage with Purple in two hours in the neighbouring City of Bonn, was kind enough to go with me through the switching.

And let's don't even start on his playing skills :)...

I've spoken to Steve after shows a few times over the years and Steve is the real deal. He is personable, considerate, down to earth and just exudes strength of character, integrity, and of course, superhuman musical genius! Thanks for sharing. :)

That's cool Keith. I was actually wondering what the story was with those T-shirts. I totally agree - Steve (and Dave) are all around great guys. I have met them both a few times and they have always been very cool and accomodating.

The show was great. Not sure what the deal was with the first act, they were ok, but didn't fit the bill IMO. Agent 22 was cool - I have seen them before open for the Dregs. Very nice stick playing by Tom Griesgrabber (sp?). Next was a short set with Steve, Sarah Spencer (w/ bass & keys). They were very good except where I was seated, there were too many people talking the whole time, so it was hard to hear the vocals and acoustic. We should have made reservations back in December. Sarah does have a fantastic voice - fits the acoustic music very nicely. Bravo to Steve for trying something completely different at this stage in his career.

Steve Morse Band was as good as always. Dave, Steve and Van are such great players - it is always a treat seeing them perform. The songs on the new album sounded great. I bought the CD, but haven't listened to it all yet - it's definitely worth picking up if you are a fan of the band. (Do it quickly, his CDs tend to go out of print).

I also chatted a bit with Travis Larson. I saw him at NAMM too, but it didn't click with me who he was until I saw him at the Coach House. He seems like a cool guy too. I told him I only recognize him and his music from the EB forum - he should be an active member. :D They definitely need to play some LA/Orange county dates!

Here is a pic with me, my son and Steve.... note he is wearing that T-shirt.

really? seems like a sucess?

I'd love to see the pic which is on the T-Shirt

As this seems to be a kind of a SMB appreciation thread I´ll show pics of meeting Steve last year (signing my guitar at a DP show) and Dave La Rue (in my hometown 2006 at a Joe Satriani-Gig - me a little younger - it was a BIG surprise: I didn´t know he does play with Joe, meeting him backstage caused a little disagreement between the presenter and me/my mate: we made our way backstage and they "caught" us and looked a bit thumb as I told them it´s mainly because the bassplayer ... who??? not Mr. Satriani???)
I told Dave that I´m a really SM(B) fan and it was a great surprise seeing him. He answered that he gigs with Joe while Steve is so busy with Deep Purple. I really wish that SMB could make it overseas some day

words cannot describe how generous Steve is with his time. He had his dinner waiting and wanted to go and get his number one to show us. Eventually we had to say "Steve go and your dinner, please"
