Fair Price for pre EB stingray

Does anyone know whats a good price for a natural finish 4 string stingray bass SN# BO16436 would be. I beleive from reading the database here it was made around March 1980. It's in excellent condition with only a small chip of finish material missing off the back that does not penetrate to the wood. Bass sounds and plays great however the case has a musty smell to it from being in a basement. My main bass was a modulus quantum 5 string and I almost prefer the sound from the stingray.

A vintage 1980 ray in good condition should be anywhere between 2200 and 2400 dollars. Anything less than that and I'd grab it in a heartbeat.

Do you think people are actually getting those prices these days, or is that the "asking" price on a place like ebay?

FWIW - I just bought a pretty nice 1979 Fretless White Ray off E-Bay for $1445. It came with the original case and accessories bag. Now to find a nice 1979 fretted neck.......

You guessed right. Less demand for fretless. For example, last year I sold my '76 fretless for $2400. If it were fretted it would likely have netted $3000.

Funny. I'd prefer to have a vintage fretless... but I generally don't understand the idea that a beat up old instrument goes for double the price of a brand spanking new one. So, to me, any 'Ray is worth about the same as any other, give or take it's playability, condition and rarity -- but to see some 90's 'Rays go for as low as $700 and some that are a couple of years older and more beat up to go for as much as four times that price does really not make sense to me.

could the fretless price be a result of old fretlesses being less desirable due to the ammount of wear they take on the fretboard as oppose to a fretted bass?

Probably just less people use fretless electrics than fretted electrics...

People with money do strange things.

Some are not beat up. Old yes, but some of us can play and maintain excellent beauties.

Price is also going to be swayed by the colour and of course condition. If it's just natural or black which are the dime a dozen finishes, then it would be the lower end of the scale. But yes, I've still seen plenty of nice condition rays sell in the 2000-2400 range in this economy.

And true about fretless, far less demand and harder to unload unless priced cheap.
