Glad to hear you got it back unharmed. I've been off the sauce for 1 1/2 years now and BP is right... The drunks really get on my nerves now.

Are you sure you actually loaded the bass in the truck in the first place? Who leaves a truck full of gear open while they go back into the venue to say goodnight?

When was the bass taken? Before or after loading
I hope you realize it is not that drunk guys fault that the bass was not on the truck. Somebody else (with more malice) could have taken that bass home with him, be careful out there

I'm always paranoid about things like this happening. I keep a hawk eye on my stuff and someone is usually at the car while I shuttle back and forth on the load in and load out.
I'm also weary of crowd drunks. While it's nice for people to feel a little happy and enjoy themselves, I hate obnoxious drunks. At one of my bands' last shows, one drunk thought it was funny to be stepping on my guitarists various pedals while he was playing. He was also telling us to turn it up (in a small confined bar) and I keep on seeing him eye the mixing board which we were only using for the vocals. Unfortunately, drunks do not understand the concept of feedback.

Given the outcome I don't know if it's as much of a horror as it is a suspense thriller...
I think the horror would end with the drunk going all Pete Townsend on it then hunting down a 30th anniversary.

I know what you mean! I ALWAYS make sure my basses are cleaned and packed as soon as I play the last note of the show. I then carry them out to my Jeep on a local gig or they go in the LOCKED cab of the truck until the guys get ready to pull off in the truck and they put them in the back for me if I have already gone. Fortunately my Sound guy is 6' 4 and strong as an ox. He usually tries to get security to handle things but if anyone gets too crazy he politely ASKS them to chill and if they give him any grief at all he (RARELY) he just grabs them in this hand hold he knows (he is a martial arts expert) and walks them out the door and the problem is solved. In the rare instance this happens I think everybody else gets the message and stays away from the gear. His biggest pet peeve is when someone sets a drink on the doghouse of my LS9....He usually just picks up the drink without a word and tosses it in the trash can that he locates conveniently near the mix position. NO ONE has ever said a word to him for tossing their drink...
Like I said he is a big guy....LOL

Locking the car in between loads is a given no matter how short the trip if there cannot be someone there to guard the car.
Conversely, I never drink on a gig and very rarely even when not on a gig. Most of the band doesn't either, that's why "free drinks" as part of payment arrangements is not too beneficial to us.

It's kind of ironic putting down drunk folks at bars when most of us buy basses/guitars, learn songs, practice with a band, work to get gigs so that we can finally.... play in front of drunks at bars.

Yeah, it sounds like the back doors of the explorer no longer like to lock when you do the electronic lock.
Regardless, it was an amazing relief to get the bass back.
The guy was long gone by the time I got back there.

Glad to hear you got it back bro. I probably would have either a) died when I'd realized that or b) killed someone. It's a sad world now a days. I can't imagine how someone could steal any musical instrument. It is like stealing a child in a way.
