Why is it important to know your basses D.O.B.? I notice that a lot of people want to know this.

FYI, I also do this but have no idea why.

Because we can? I think by knowing the DOB it provides a little extra attachment to your instrument, like it's part of the family.

Normally the only date I need to know is the year, but in the case of my 30th Anniversary I got lucky and discovered the DOB is the same day as my birthday.

I think it tells a story about your instrument that makes it personal to you. Knowing where it was made on your older stuff. It's like eye candy for your bass, it dresses it up. I for one am a nut about it, I don't know why, but in the proccess of looking I've made friends and found out much more then the DOB of my bass. I've learned alot about the company and the struggles they have endured until now. Steamthief said it best by saying "Because we can? I think by knowing the DOB it provides a little extra attachment to your instrument, like it's part of the family."
And it help others searching for the same thing as you when you can put some information out there.

Because we are human Beans, and we want to know stuff about things.

Who? What... I heard my name... huh?

I went so far as to take a small sliver off my 'Ray and have it embedded into my upper arm... 'cause we're together now!

:p

You can also buy presents for them on their special day. New strings, stomp boxes, a jug of Wonder Wipes. Maybe even an SVT when they're old enough to drive.

Let's face it... our guitars and basses are still going to be here when we are gone! Our heirs will either sell them or treasure them, and for them to know accurate details of both provenance and date of built only adds to the value for a potential buyer.

Well, I bought mine Sterling without knowing anything about the date of production (year only), just try it in the store twice, search over the Internet to collect some more informations about that model, visited official site to collect basic info...etc.
I wasn't even a member of this forum!

Later I made on-line registration, become a member here, ask about production number at the proper Thread and one of nice guys there wrote to me reply with exact date of "birth" of my bass! :)

It's nice to know that information, why not?
I decided to never sell my bass anyway! ;)

Just nice to no when it left the factory and began its journey on it way to you if you had it from new or got it S/H just gives you a bit of an idea of what its been doing with its life until you got it it your collection.
Plus always a good excuse for a party, i like that one :)

Like Keko said "It's nice to know that information, why not?

I've been trying to find a lab that would give me a DNA profile for my Bongos, but so far they just look at me funny.

it'd be awesome if it turned out to be 1/3 bass 1/3 t-rex 1/3 stegosaurus

It would be terrible if someone found out a bass was their son...terrible or magical...one of the two.

i for one like knowing the DOB cause as corny as it sounds im sentimental for dates. march 9 to me is a time during one of the most depressing lousy crappy times in my life where things started to turn around. and believe me getting a musicman, which had always been some kind of impossible dream was something wonderful to an 18 year old who was going through a bad time. and it was wonderful enough to make me look at that year different. i worked really hard at a crappy pizza joint with a maniacal boss who would explode even if you did everything right while listening to the most bottom of the barrel classic rock songs on radio but it all was very worth it.
