Funny story is i had played a crappy imported 5 string bass for close to 10 years. Kinda got in and out of playing the first few years i was in the Navy. Got back into it pretty heavy and decided i would buy my dream bass at the time... A W*r*i*k that apparently people only play with there Thumb. After about 2 hours playing both a 4 and 5 string i realized i disliked how it played and sounded. Lucky for me Rich Sherman (Manager at Guitar Center in New London, CT) had a thing for MM basses and made me play a few. An HH Stingray, HS Sterling and HH Bongo. I went home with a natural Sterling 4HS that day. That started the obsession. JOSH

Hey Matt - don't feel too bad, the Bongo went to a good home.
I bought my first Stingray in 1978. Every bass player I knew had a Fender back then. I never liked them, they just weren't for me. I went to a little mom & pop music store in Fremont CA and fell in love with the all black Stingray. The tone killed for the punk and rock style that I was playing back then. And it looked nothing like the basses the local San Francisco guys were playing.
Once I found this forum, I started getting interested in the Bongo. I could never find one in store here in Denver, but I got a great deal on a 5 string Ray that I couldn't pass up. I bought my first Bongo about a year later on faith that is was as good as all the knuckleheads said it was - and it was. Next came Mr Manflooy's Bongo, then a Big Al. Who knows what tomorrow will bring...

ABSOLUTELY! I couldn't be happier with where they both went. I just would like to find a DD1 Fiver someday. I do miss them but after a reality check with the ones I have downstairs I feel a bit better... they ain't no slouches either ya' know!
Bongo's do kick a$$ too... BTW... should have walked out of the Ft. Myers GC with the first one I ever played... it really doesn't matter which one is your first... there will be more....

You say "old and crusty" like it's a bad thing. I've worked hard to get this way at 51! I can't wait till I'm in my 70s and still beating on the newest MM basses.

Late bloomer myself both to bass playing and to EBMM. Hit my 40"s and I wanted to play some music. I always loved good bass lines so I got a Squ&@r Bass Pack. Even after only 3 weeks of lessons, I knew this had to go back to be replaced with something better. Then I went through a bunch of different basses, never quite content.
Meanwhile, I got my son a EBMM John Petrucci. I fell in love with that guitar, especially the unfinished neck and awesome build quality. There were F$nders going for the same price, if not more, and I quickly learned that some companies offered way better value. Anything by EBMM blows away F$nder!
Then I tried a Sterling and fell in love. Loved the ergonomics of the bass first, then the tone. It is such a ballsy angry bass!
Bongo HH with flats is the Ying to my Sterling H with roundwounds Yang.
Since getting my furst EBMM, my bass playing has improved a gazillion percent since it is such a joy to play these instruments. With my previous basses, I might have played an hour or two a week tops. Now I play an hour a day, or about 10 hours a week.

First post in this forum. Hello everyone!
My first EB MM was a '06 carbon blue perl Ray H 3eq. Still got it.
I went into Music-Man world listening to bands like Lagwagon and Beerbong.
I was very impressed by that sound of train-like bass.

My first, and only, but not the last one is Sterling 5 HS 2008. which I bought in 2009.
I was trying to buy Music Man long time before, looking for second hand one for a 20 years , but it's very difficult to find it second hand in my area! (today not any more)
Than I finally decided to buy a new one! (always wanted a Sterling)
This Sterling is also my first 5 string bass, ...it was really difficult to decide: switch to 5 strings or stick with 4 bangers?
Today I'm determine, I'll stick with EBMM basses and know exactly what I need.
I need one more 5 banger single H "working horse" for 70% of use (probably incoming Reflex), and later for a comfort and good ol' days I'll buy one decent fret-less 4 banger with piezo, not sure yet which model?

The SR was my first (bought at age 17, man I worked hours for that bass), the bongo was my third en de SR5 my fourth. The second, a '93 frettless sterling, is gone. The good thing is that I got the SR5 back for it.
The one and only reason I wanted a SR at the time? Flea!

A black/maple Sterling I bought in '94. Had the bridge with mutes. Cool bass.

My first EBMM was a 2004 vintage sunburst SR5 with a black pickguard and rosewood board. I was naive and sold it and moved to a three letter M brand only to come back 6 years later. It's good to be back and I'm most excited about ordering my first Big Al soon.

My first EBMM is my beloved 20th SR5... the reasons... It is absolutely drop-dead gorgeous, and of course the notorious Stingray sound

2000 SR4H, metal flake brown w/mhs. Why? StingRay Sound! Plus, I loved the paint job.
