Is there an effect out there that I can use to do long sustained synth pad tones with.

Stuff for intros of songs... nothing fancy, just simple filler stuff.

Thanks

A looper would do the trick nicely, hit a note, hit record and loop.
Or you could use an ebow:D

Not exactly the tone I'm looking for. I'd like to mimic a synth pad that sounds more like long sustained strings.

Something like the pad at the intro to "Welcome to the Boomtown", "No Quarter" or "Where the Streets Have no Name"

or, you know, the boomtown intro, treble rolled off, hit the note, roll up the volume, loop it.
What an album, btw!

edit: won't work, tried it lol, I think you'll need some kind of filter to make that happen...

I have a Boss ME-50B and I have used it for synth sounds like you're describing. It has a sound hold feature where you can play a note and it will record and loop it so it sounds like one long sustained note. The note sustain continuously until you pull the volume pedal down. Use the Drive/Synth section to get the synthy tone with the sound hold and you got it. I've done this several times with more than satisfactory results.
