I am sorry to call you sacks of old tarts sacksof old tarts but how could you mis the point bigger....it was a assemblege of talented musicians who NEVER would play together and covering a song that is a party foul if you ply it in Guitar Center and the rocked it. It was never meant to be anything but musicians having a blast..the detailed critique like foggie and the rest is why you tube and keyboard critics are stifling improv, experimanet and anyting but safe and sterile....

I liked it. I wasn't sure that song should be covered blah blah blah.
But after seeing it I was quite impressed.
First off Vai is awesome. He makes it look so easy. And I wanted him to solo too but if he wants to hand it over to the up and coming I'm not gonna argue. After all some established person had to step aside for us right? And I'm glad they did.
Second I like Orianthi. I didn't know her before she appeared on Idol a while back but her playing impressed me. I got her cd not long after and I like it. Solid songs with cool solos. She played well and turned in a solid solo. Trying to copy Pages solo would have been a no no.
Randy played and sounded great. My wife never knew about Randys playing days so it was cool to see her react to Randy that way. She was like wow he's good. And seeing the Big Al on that stage really sold me on the design. Seeing the bass on a stand didn't impress me like seeing one being played. And man did that thing through the mix! And the color was the perfect choice.
Travis Barker is a solid drummer. I dug him in Blink and it was nice to see him do something else. Him attacking the kit at the end of the song was what every drummer should do at least once per gig.
And Mary J did just fine. The way I see it, I would rather her performance that someone like Beyoncee who oversings every single note. Someone needs to tell her and some of these singers who turn every word into a scale exercise.
So consider me on the side that liked it a lot.

I need everyone to understand that its ok to not like it...my point is that whatever grading scale you are useing consider the thought process. Also Vai doesnt decide who solos the producer did

I wasn't minding it up until the 'And as we wind on down the road'. After that it just got too hammy for me.
Vai's great doing his own thing, and doing the Zappa thing.
I really want to like Orianthi. She's my age, Australian, and has chops. My personal opinion is that she's being forced by the music world to overplay everything, which is odd considering she idolises Carlos.
Travis kicked ass, as always. Whatever anyone thinks he's one of the best drummers of our time.
Couldn't really hear Randy, or the keyboards, on my little laptop speakers...but from what I've heard from him before he's a solid bass player, which is what this song needs.
And BP: I know what you mean about the grading scale, but if they'd covered, say, 'Nothing but a good time', or some other hit, I think you'd have less people having a go at them...but Stairway is SUCH a massive, iconic song you're gonna get a lot of people, especially on a guitar forum, that have a lot of pretty strong opinions about it.
On a positive note, I dont usually watch American Idol. My wife watches
every season and I just happened to be watching when Randy was Rockin
the Music Man Big Al Bass guitar. I love both of my Music Man guitar's and
couldn't help to get excited when Randy was playing. I kept making my wife
rewind back to when he was groovin it on stage.
I told my wife it kind
of felt like watching a family member on stage.She said I was a dork

This is funny here is a show with music... Live Music I guess you guys would prefer tractor pulls or home decorating or cops shows. I for one am happy that the number one show in America features new talent and live music..even if it isnt my cup of tea. This is an easier argument than the people who keep criticising Guitar hero...it grew guitarist. Its a fact AI brings young musicians to the forefront. Our battle of the bands does too. It takes a lot to keep music live
i was watching the other day and Simon said that AI was a shortcut to fame....
i have no problem with that at all... i think the "biz" or any biz for the matter is all about opportunity and taking advantage of the moments you're given. How many times do we have conversations with friends after big concerts where we say that the original artist butchered their own song... or even how many of us butcher songs we play? I've done it plenty- that being said i think AI really provides a front for young musicians to take advantage of an opportunity- there have been a few musical greats to come out of AI

And there lies the rub, producer's of a America's biggest music show completely missing the mark by making seasoned musicians look.....well like amateurs. Do you get the feeling that Jeff Beck would've told them to F themselves in that situation?

I don't think that they looked like amateur, but it is the mix of genres that doesn't make a good stew overall. It was just wierd! Whether it was the mix of musicians, the song, or whatever, it was just strange. I would think those guys and gal made the most out of what they were given. At least they didn't have to do a Ford commercial!

YOu guys are so funny...Jeff Beck I think embarrassed himself a half hour before.... The song he played did not fit his style in the least bit.NOBODY turns down the AI exposure

BP- I didn't know Hicks was still doing anything... the last i saw of him wasn't very impressive. I'm glad to hear that he's still around and doing well...
I didn't catch all of Beck... but what i did see it certainly didn't seem like Beck at all... I saw him a few weeks ago on PBS and it was classic Beck to the max... but if you can get exposure and keep yourself relevant you gotta do what ya gotta do...

Wow! That five minutes worth of Zep has certainly kicked up a stink.
I think the idea of doing such an iconic song was the point, considering what that particular AI show was about.
Does it really matter how good/bad we all thought it was.
What I think does matter was that it may have helped raise money for the charities that show is supporting..surely this is a good thing?
From now on I may have to change my name to St. Peter.
