Refinish it with Birchwood Casey gunstock oil. Available at most sporting goods stores or at well stocked gun shops.

Refinish it with Birchwood Casey gunstock oil.

I think the OP is indicating the neck is lacquered, as they would have been back then.

Options would appear to be -

1. remove the clearcoat lacquer and refinish in clear lacquer
2. remove the clearcoat lacquer and use an gun oil finish instead

A pic might assist with the diagnosis though.

a pic wouldn't really help. you can't see it but you can feel it. i think the refinishing thing is what i'll have to do, it's driving me crazy. back to the fender for a few days!!!

I would buy a grey Scotchbrite Pad and try just taking a little of the finish off the surface. That might stop the problem, at least for a while. I like the feeling of a neck worn down to the bare wood so I'd probably take it down a bit further :)

sanded it down by a few coats, no luck. refinish is the solution i think.

Someone brought around an old Steve Morse guitar - it had a finished neck and he was experiencing the same kind of thing - I took some Brasso (similar to T cut) applied a small amount to a cloth and buffed it back - job was a good 'un!!

The smell will go away in a few days. But I love the oil and wax method because it allows me to easily repair dings, then "refinish" it myself.

Plus the feel of the wood on an un-lacquered neck is awesome.
