Generally speaking plate has to do with the inner steel core composition, and wound is the outer wrap around that. Yes, the "more" nickel the "warmer", slightly softer the tone!!!

Pure nickel - Awesome!!! Love the #2253 strings in 9's

Bam,

They are both, (and more), but in comparison:

The steel core wire in the nickel wound strings is "unplated", (hence brighter), as well as having an outer wrap of nickel plated steel wire (hence brighter).

Whereas the pure nickel has an inner steel core that is tin "plated" (hence warmer), as well as having an outer wrap of pure nickel wire (hence warmer).

I hope I explained this correctly!! If not, maybe another formuite can elaborate. Also, look aroiund and check the string packages and also the information on the Music man site, etc. . . for more info. Lots of info out there.:)

TNT,
the core wire is tin plated for both nickel plated steel strings and pure nickel strings. The tonal difference primarily comes from the wrap wire.

I have tried both GHS boomers and Ernie Ball Slinky regular strings. I noticed that the Ernie Ball slinky regular strings seem to be brighter and more metellic sounding (twang). The feel of the GHS strings seem to be harder (steel like). The GHS are stiff and the Ernie Balls are flexiable. The confusion is that the Ernie Ball sklinky bass strings are not adavertised as nickel plated but, nickel round wound.

Yeah, I wasn't quite sure, but I think the nickel wound strings have an "unplated" steel core wire??!! I'll double check.

Both the GHS Boomers and the Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings use nickel plated steel as the outer shell of the strings. The main difference between the two is that the Boomers use an alloy core that the shell is wrapped around, as opposed to the steel core that the Super Slinky's use.

dbamta,
don't believe everything you read on the internet ;). I really don't think there's a difference in the materials, however, Boomers do have bigger cores than Slinkys. Even GHS stated this one their own forum. According to a post from the GHS forum administrator, "Our Boomers have slightly larger core sizes than Slinky's making the Boomers...All plain strings are made from the same material, no matter who made them.
