YOu arent offending me...I get it. ONe of my earliest infleunces or mentors was Jack Marshall...Pretty much the first session cat in LA. He produced Peggy Lees Fever, Wrote the Munsters Theme...Produced all of Howard Roberts classic jazz guitar albums...did the transcriptions for Christopher Parkening...(His son Frank is a movie producer Et Raiders just about every big movie) When We moved to Newport in 67 we were trying to go to sleep but this crazy Jazz was coming from the neighbors house....My Dad says..."That sounds just like Ray Brown!" Who are these guys....WE crashed the neighbors jam session...They welcomed us...It was Ray Brown , Howard Roberts Jack Shelly Manne and Jack Sheldon.

SO that is for you old people...but for those who dont know the names...this was serious LA Mafia

I was talking to Jack about guitars.....I was 15 and wanting something...He said "Sterling....its in the hands and heart....the soul"......I looked at him kind of crazy and he said " Howard Roberts can the worst guitar in the world speak"

SOrry for the rant again but you can take a recipe out of a cookbook and have 10 people cook it and all will be different. I mention the diming because it goes hand in hand with the not trying to understand all the nuances that create tone.

bp, we r definitely smokin the same dope. love it. ur pops "heard" ray brown. knew it was him just by listening. unreal. thats actually the best compliment i ever get. someone will walk up to me and go....(lately its) "that's you playing on the lady antebellum stuff isnt it??? i knew it was you, as soon as it came on the radio." i cant get a better compliment than for someone to hear "me" or my "spirit" in a tune, cause thats exactly what im trying put right up in it. these basses are part of that spirit, and i am as passionate about them as u are. if someone rips on them, i almost take it personal. they are really putting down the things that inspire me. and theres just absolutely no reason for it other than american consumerism featurism give us more features and tricks every month and mezmerize our lazy asses even if it ruins the original product. lame. i better stop, because my only next logical thought puts me onto a political stage, and i already got a job.

Thats a cool story with an even cooler Stingray ending!
And another example of owning cars that match your bass ! Nice one! :)

CV, great to hear your story, and you are SO RIGHT about the right hand position -- move it one inch -- pow.

Curious, are you mostly stringing your rays w/ rounds or flats for the studio work?

furthermore, anyone who even thinks in the terms of "well the bass only has 2 knobs and does one thing" has already proven themselves an idiot. theyre not even in the game enough to know that the bass isnt even the instrument... I AM! .... i play it... not it plays me. its a tool! im making the sound. if your bass is the source of your tone... you aint there yet cat."

Okay, now I get it. This is "The Greatest Bass Story Ever Told."

Jewel's "Pieces Of You" is a GREAT album ... her first, if I remember right, and still my favorite of hers. Not overproduced - the stuff she'd been doing in San Diego coffee shops, living in a VW bus before getting her break. I'll definitely have to break it out again. You played on "You Were Meant For Me", huh? Great song. Any others on that album?

Gorgeous Classic, Congrats.

brother travis, you have no idea how much that letter meant to me. writing you back is at the top of my list of "things to do with free time" this weekend. most people wouldnt ever know how much of the songs vibe and emotion really emanates from the bass unless you muted it, so its a really lovely feeling to know that someone connected with my part and was moved by it. it doesnt get better than that. well..... unless scarlet johannsen asked me out. that would b at least a tie.

I think Lincoln is a great guy. We play some of his worship music in our church. Everlasting God is a definite favorite song of mine to play.

JayDawg, yes our worship team plays a lot of his stuff also.Norm Stockton's work with Lincoln is exceptional,he is one fine bassist:)

Hey Cyoung,is that a Sunn 200s in that photo? Man with your SR that has to be just killer!Looking forward to hearing your playing. You Nashville guys are the best of the best.I talked to Craig Nelson a while back and he said Jackie Street had died. What a great player he was.Craig Nelson's work with John Hammond on 2 cd's by the vocal group 'The Blenders' "Songs from the soul" is old school funk that is incredible.I'll bet you get to hang out or play with some of these dudes.Scott Williamson,Tommy Sims,Jimmy Johnson,Sloas? You guys are all great ;)
