Tone and music style JP6 BFR Maple vs Koa

First, all the BFR's are eye candy and almost impossible to choose between on looks. I have narrowed my choice to the JP6 BFR Koa and the JP6 BFR Quilted Tobacco Maple and have saved up to purchase either.

My concern now is overall tone. I have listened to some YouTube videos comparing the two, I can hear differences. I am looking for a guitar that is versatile and has a broad range of tones - from brighter tones of the 60's to Hair Metal to Dream Theatre. I am guessing the Koa/Mahogany has a more Gibson tone.

I do not have access locally to compare.

Advise?

I don't see that JP uses a Koa.

Well I would not take a clip on Youtube as gospel as how things are recorded makes a big difference. I know it might be really hard to find a store that has both models for you to make a live comparison, but I believe someone on the forum has owned both and could give you an honest answer on the difference in tone. I think the KOA is just a beautiful looking ax and also the Mahogany would have a slight tone difference than Maple but then again are you looking to sound exactly like Petrucci. Go and checkout both and go with what sounds good to you and fits your musical direction as this is a guitar that will be with you for a long time. I own a few artist model guitars that I really am not a big fan of the artist, but liked the guitar and what the guitar offered.

Something as simple as the thickness of a pick can change the tone

of any guitar. The amp, recording, time of month, So many factors have

an impact on tone. It's best to wait and be able to hold the JP in your

hands to hear for yourself. The woods on the BFR's I believe are limited

runs. I have played The JP Koa top BFR w/ a Mahogany body and have

played the JP Alder BFR Maple top w/ a Mahogany Tone Block. I love

both guitars. Bindfolded, I would not be able to match the tone with the

guitar. I'm sure there are aficionado's that could though. It's all way to

subjective. This thread could go into a matrix of personal opinions. The best

advice really is to listen, feel and play for yourself. Hopefully, you will

get the opportunity to play a Music Man guitar. When I did, It was a

life, Tone changing experience for me. Good Luck
