1) They have an excellent tone range. Seriously, the Music Man preamp might be the most sensitive and well defined I've ever played.

2) The basses have good ergonomics. Everything is very comfortable.

3) The combinations of tones and aesthetics give the basses a certain personality that I don't see in other instruments. The Bongo is the primary example.

4) Music Man is the only company from which I've purchased basses who actually ever gave a crap about who I am and what I need. Customer service is remarkably easy to forget -- not here. Always there when I have a question or need spare parts (like a couple of weeks ago).

5) The relationship that I have with Music Man has outlasted every single other personal relationship I've ever had. Finally, something in my life that doesn't judge me!

For me the Stingray is without a doubt the very Best "off the rack" Bass money can buy, Leo designed, BP and crew Refined, Lynottfan tries to define, with his playing, its a personal thing, but a Ray is weapon of mass destruction, the build is top, Louis beat the crap out of one and it never gave up, Nard looked cool, Ray it had to be.

I first fell in love with the sound of these basses back in the 70s - lots of people had moved on to them instead of P basses and J basses because they covered all that ground and also a whole lot more, but didn't cost a fortune to buy (say like an Alembic) - basically all the cool cats played them.

For me these instruments allow me to make my favourite bass sounds and extend myself as a musician, they feel great to play, are built like a tank, are reliable, and look great.

Oh and the company that makes them is heavily customer focussed, and is innovative :)

I have been playing all of my basses for the last few hours. On my one 5 string, I re-strung it with some Ernie Ball Regular Slinkies and then had to do a set up on it. Anyway, after playing all of my basses, it has reaffirmed to me why my others ones have not been getting as much love lately. Everything about my Music Man bass blows them away. I absolutely love the Sterling bass that I have. It's tone is perfect. It's intonation is spot on. Even when I play it at the 12 fret and beyond, it is still spot on. On my other basses, the further down on the neck I go, the intonation goes a little sharp. Not by much but it is there. When I was playing my Sterling, all I could think of was "To bad I'm not super rich so I could buy a plethera of Music Man basses."

JayDawg I just read your thread regarding your special bass. I think that thread could speak volumes as to why people might buy MM over another brand.

Yeah, I was very shocked by that too. I asked but didn't really think I would have any success because I understand the reasons why companies don't do custom work unless you are an endorsed artist. When BP said he would build the bass, I was blown away. Then when he offered to donate the funds from it to our Relay for Life team, I was sold forever on all EBMM products. All of my basses now have Ernie Ball strings and will always have Ernie Ball strings from here on out. I used a different brand prior and while I used to have good success with that brand for years, over the last year or so the strings have gone dead much to quickly so I was already thinking about changing strings anyway.

Again, my wife and I ares till very humbled by the generosity of BP and others on this site.
Thank you all and thank you BP again for all that you have done!

These issues could be easily fixed.

Tune each open string using an electronic tuner.

Fret the high octave of the same note at the 12th fret of the same string that you just tuned.

If the fretted note at the 12th fret is sharp in reference to the tuned open string, move the saddle back (towards the bridge) and re-check the two notes. This may take a few attempts until they both match. Be sure to re-tune the open string between each attempt.

If the fretted note at the 12th fret is flat in reference to the the tuned open string, move the saddle forward (towards the neck) and re-check the two notes. This may take a few attempts until they both match. Be sure to re-tune the open string between each attempt.

Repeat for each string.

It's also best to do this with fresh stings.

P.S. I hope things continue to go well for your family.

When you buy an EB and then actively participate in the forum you get more than an instrument. You become part of this knucklehead culture that makes ownership very enjoyable.

For me, EBMM is the peak of the diminishing returns curve. It was the 1st bass I ever fell in love with and holding one simply feels like home; like slipping on your favorite pair of blue jeans.

It's everything from the looks, to the quality control, to the tone, to the built to order "custom shop" feel, to the quality control. These basses are pieces of art, as well as great tools. Also, this forum is like reading episodes of Seinfeld. A show about nothing, yet I still find myself on here all the time just to see what happens next.

It's a standard, every serious bass player should have one.
I own three.
