Necks

I've always loved the waxed necks of the Music Man basses and guitars. The feel of natural waxed wood just feels smoother to me than polyester, paint, etc. I was lucky enough to score my Classic with a waxed neck. I tried a Classic with a glossy neck and it just didn't feel right to me. Personal taste I know.

It seems like the glossy necks are the rage in MM. Am I the last holdout for waxed necks?

Nope. I like the waxed necks better, too.

But it's nice that the glossy neck fans get a shot at having one.

I like them both . . . currently don't have a favorite.
I do prefer the flatter, modern 11" radius though.

Smooth neck

I have actually lightly sanded the necks using 800 grit wet/dry followed by a very light application of true oil and then wax. They are very smooth. I found that you have to be careful to not apply much of the true oil or the neck will start to feel a little more like the glossy necks.

The smooth waxed neck is what drew me to EBMM in the first place. Nothing like it!

In The Past Most Paints as in Clear Lacquer we're sticky to the feel, I believe now Music Man Has found a great formula because now it feels great. I love Both oiled and finished.

Love the oil & wax finish. One of the reasons for me to play EBMM basses.

I have sweaty palms, so when my thumb gets the sweat on it, i get to slide pretty nicely along the gloss neck.

I found out about this only when i tried the classic, so i guess it was a pleasant surprise. I tried the oil and wax neck too, it felt natural to play on, but definitely prefer the gloss one.

However i have no idea if the gloss will turn sticky-ish over time with the sweat. My brother has a 6 year old JP guitar, and i love how the neck is still smooth on the waxed neck!

I have to say, that since I've been fiancially out of the market for a new bass, I haven't had the need to check out the new Classic series. I will have to let you know my feelings, once I get a job, and have the means to answer the GAS attack...

I like them both.. I'm assuming my 92 is oiled or waxed and my 30th is gloss?

I think the 92 neck (which is highly figured Birdseye maple) seems more susceptable to climate changes. Don't know if it is because of the birdseye or because it is waxed instead of finished.

Either way they both feel good.

When I decided to buy an EBMM bass, there were all pluses for that, except unfinished neck!
Main reason was my bad experience with pre owned [email protected] bass, but now, after over a year of usage I like it, I used to it!

Anyway, now when new Classic 5 SR is arrived, I honestly considering one!
I really like those beautiful finished EBMM Classic series maple necks, and really would like to have one single parallel alnico EBMM 5 stringer!
If will be any chance in the close future, I'll take one, probably "Blacky" with maple FB!

Final conclusion: I do like both, unfinished and finished necks!
