After "instant messaging" with another forum member earlier today, I've been thinking...uh oh.

Instant messaging is more conversational than posting on a forum due to it being instantaneous. Hey, I guess that's why they named it that, huh?

The forum member remarked about me being more "down-to-Earth" while instant messaging which made me realize that when posting on the forum I carefully choose my words, proof-read, edit and re-edit, present facts, opinions, trivia, and of course, humor.

I always try to come across as "real" and if I happen to agonize over a post or thread, I stand the risk of losing some of that personal element.

Mrs.sitonmybass constantly refers to me as being "passionate" about music/bass playing.

I hope to start striking a balance between being just words on a screen and coming across as more of a "real" person.

Although marvelous, the internet is a funny and sometimes "tricky" thing.

Because it is easy for a reader to misinterpret or not understand a written posting, I do as Nick does.

In conversation, a listener can immediately question/challenge a statement, and we usually are quick to clarify. This is not the case with written communication.

Instant-messaging systems suffer like all other written systems.

Precisely!

There's the lack of face to face interaction which can lead to mis-communication. It seems to be easier to "read" someone's intention(s) in regards to communication when you have the benefit of being together in person.

Sorry for being so off-topic, but it's something that we all have in common as a result of interacting on this forum.

another thing to remember (note to self in particular) is the nature of internet posts is that they are there for as long as googles datacentres stay up.
so what you say will come back to haunt you for some time to come

I just got a vision of a scene from a futuristic film; the world is pretty much devastated, but people start reading this stuff. The data centers didn't stop running, and nobody really knows what to make of all the forums.

The idea has been done in films like Zardoz, Planet of the Apes, and probably several others I can't recall. (And, no I'm not gonna use the Internet to look up other films!)
