Way back when the first mentinos of the 25:th anniversary were made, one of the most interesting things (to me) was the new, 4-wing, lightweight tuner. It didn't show up on the 25:ths, and it was said it was because it wasn't ready yet. But now the reflexes are rolling out, and still the same tuners that were on the 25:th are used.

So was the design ditched, or is it still in transit?

What's wrong with 25th/reflex tuners?

That's it for me! ;)

Edit: -we could talk only about the color of tuners to match the headstock paint color...etc.

There's nothing wrong with the 25th / Reflex tuners at all.

You've probably missed that bit of news, but at the time it was being designed (The 25th Anniversary that is...) BP announced the possibility of a new style of tuners with 4 wings, but as Strummer said it didn't happen on time.

That brings us to the bass tuning key. I giant hunk of metal......Been using the same one for 50 years. Our guys went about making a tuning key that had the same gearing and feel but with most of the mass taken out. This design does not require the backing plate or the screws. it also has 4 "wings" instead of two for tuning ease To give you an example on a five string bass this bass will weight one half of a pound lighter than the old ones....and thats just the keys. Keep in mind that when you put a half of a pound about a foot and a half on the end of a neck it is heavy. Now without those giant plates we can make the headstock smaller.....also by stealing from our guitar design we can make a neck that doesnt need a string retainer and actually functions better due to the downward pressure of the compensated nut.......Now we shrink the headstock and end up with a headstock that is only 10% bigger than an Axis guitars with a boatload of weight gone....we can do alot of things with that weight gone or redistributed in terms of body ergonomics and balance points....

The red outline is the sterling headstock shape

something's wrong with that picture Fran... I don't see any chips in the finish of that peghead...:D

Sorry... I couldn't resist since I just hacked my DDII Bongo on one of my drummers cymbals in an attempt to pick up a dropped drumstick!

No worries, and as for chips and dings, none of my basses have any not even those I've had for over 17 years and longer. I treat them all with plenty TLC. Anyone who manhandles them more than likely it's them who end up being "re-touched" :D

:D Yeah, I give my basses lots of love too... and it was merely an accident that was my own damn fault (I'm still mad as heck!) But I have sacrificed Mitch (bongo 4HH) for the better good of the Jr. High Jazz band and my 14 year old son (I wish I could have cut my teeth on a Bongo) Anyway, let's just say that swinging music stands and trombone/saxophone bells don't do anything good for the finish of a bass !

Love the idea of smaller and lighter out there at the headstock. The lighter out there, the better, in my experience.

Weekends are not the ideal time to be looking for information that could only come from a highly placed source.......

pardon my dumbidity, but what does "4-wing" mean? i can't see anything that sticks out as being 4 wing in the renderings.
